ok, so i love my dish. it's raining HARD out. i got error 771 and lost my show on HD (SciChannel) twice. i reset the box and it came back. i ran a test and got > 90+ on all satellites and transponders except for maybe a couple of ZEROs on i think 103a and b. i would say 98% of satellites and transponders are reading 90+% signal.
the dish is really secure and i have great LOS.
is this normal?
ok, real NooB question...what are the transponders? what satellites are MOST important?
thanks guys!!! (and gals if there are any) :)

Congrats on the RAIN and the LOS! Wish I had either -- or both. Suspect that others will respond soon to answer your satellite questions. Satellite strength readings of 90+ are really good and transponders can generally be thought of as channels. I suspect you have no problems other than a severe rainstorm.

101 carries core programming and channel/guide info.
99/103 carry HD locals and the vast majority of HD programming. They are also carried at higher frequency (ka band) and thus can be more sensitive to rain fade.
110 carries a few HD channels
119 carries a few HD channels and SD locals for a number of markets.
It is normal for you to lose signal on 99/103 before the others. SciHD is in fact carried on 103b.

I had a bad BBC that caused my 771 problem.

Sounds like rain fade to me. Wish I had enough rain to lose my signal here. we are about to dry up and blow away.

Rain fade is usually at the head of an incoming storm (build up of clouds). Most likely that by the time you reset your machine, the fade portion of the storm had passed.

It's just rain fade IMO. I got the (771) for half an hour last night around 5pm as a storm was passing through and when it passed, I reset the hr20-700 (which is a pain in the arse) because it takes longer than an old computer.

i'm not liking rain fade! my wife is not too thrilled since we just got D* and we already lost signal. we have nasty storms up here in the northeast!

We know about rain down here, especially during monsoon season(summer). It (rain fade) really is much less frequent than you have unfortunately seen.

We have had DTV in NH for over 10 years now and it has ALWAYS surpassed our cable reliability. The storm has to be really nasty to knock out your signal.
I would make sure your signal is in the 90's all the way around and that the mount is solid and doesn't shake.

I had rain fade for a long time and I finally got fed up with it and called D*. It took several dish alignments, but it has been almost a year and a half since the last signal loss. Sometimes you just have to be persistent when speaking with D* and tell them what you're expectations are. Good luck!

I wonder if the cable connectors are loose and getting water in them.
I've had rain [& hail] fade, but it hasn't lasted more than a few min.
Wait until there is snow buildup on your dish.

and i don't have a ladder big enough to get up there! i might be able to lean out the window with a broom though.
