View Full Version : RCA DRD485RG's component outputs

I have this DirecTV receiver in 3 rooms. I finally just bought the new Denon AVR-3803 HT receiver that does component video switching and up-conversion. I now can use all 3 video outputs, composite, S-Video, and Component on my JVC AV36D302 which only has 2 rear inputs.

Here's the thing, my JVC seems to use the more standard 7.5 IRE Black level setting on it's component video input. This is great because the component input's brightness will match my composite and S-Video source inputs. On my Panasonic DVD player, I just leave the Black Level setting to Lighter.

Here's the problem, the RCA DRD485RG has no black level setting that I can find and it's outputting the MUCH TO DARK "0 IRE" Black level setting. I verified this by putting my DVD player to it's 0 IRE setting, and both device's black levels were identical, referenced to brightness. RCA's technical help wants my personal info. for support, but can't guarantee it won't be sold or given for solicitation. I called DirecTV tech support and they believe there is no black level setting. This makes the component outputs useless.

My television only has one picture memory setting, so all video formats must be around the same, to get a good picture. Judging a totally black scene, and using composite, S-Video, and Component Video outputs from my DVD player at it's 7.5 IRE Black level, all JVC TV video input formats have very near to the same black level calibration. So the one picture memory setting should work, as long as the device's component outputs are compatible with a black level of 7.5 IRE, as all DVD players are.

Even if I had separate picture memory settings for each rear video input, this would not help. The Denon AVR-3803 up-converts everything to go out through the component. It does this at the stardard 7.5 IRE Black Level. So even if I could adjust for the RCA's lower than standard black level, converting any other video format to component will be much to bright.

I'm really disgusted with this. I've already bought 2 component cables for $80 to use for the output of the RCA to the Denon, and from the Denon to the JVC TV. I already had one for the DVD player but couldn't use it since the JVC only had 2 rear inputs. I used one for composite and the other for S-Video.

I'm hoping someone has a work around, other than just going through the on-screen menu and readjusting the brightness every time I want to change video formats. I will not do that. While the components color is better, it's not that much better for all the hassle.

Thanks for the future help!
