View Full Version : OTA w/ Diplexer Installation Question

I have an OTA with a built in diplexer, my multiswitch is outside so I can't use the BBC outside either. So I decided to have a dedicated line for the local HD channels.
Now, let me explain my setup. I have the slimline Dish and a 2 lnb regular dish for the local channels. Both of them goes to a multiswitch, which is outside and then there's two line goes to a separate BBC which goes to the receiver. The question is, how do I get power for the OTA since I won't be able to have a satellite line through it? (Unless somebody can tell me differently) I heard that I can get a signal amplifier and power the OTA that way, but do I have to get one with a specific voltage or does that not matter?
Thanks for your help. I've find this forum very helpful ever since I've gotten my DirecTv a month ago.

hey brasil,
you shouldn't need to do anything power-wise for your OTA, as long as you've got the proper antenna etc for your OTA. Then that third OTA cable simply goes into your HR and you can run the antenna setup and you should be good to go.

I think you are misunderstanding the question (or I am!). The OP probably has an antenna with a built-in pre-amplifier that is normally powered from the power on the satellite cable. By removing diplexing, the antenna pre-amp will no longer be powered.
The solution is to use a separate "power injector" on the cable between the receiver and the OTA antenna. Call the manufacturer of the antenna and ask them about a power injector.

I know that you know more about this than me but, I am visualizing that the OP has a module with the preamp built in and it may have a connection for a seperate power supply. If not, the module should be bypassed as you suggested.

Now maybe I missed it too but....
The OTA needs to have DC power for the amp, but it's diplexed, so the power inserter needs to be before the first diplexer. Right?

"So I decided to have a dedicated line for the local HD channels."
We are working the problem from the above premis.

But then there is: "Both of them goes to a multiswitch, which is outside and then there's two line goes to a separate BBC which goes to the receiver".
I've put in my two cents and will leave this to those that have some clue as to what is going on here. :)

I predict that around post #15, a very key piece of information will make all clear. :sure:

It is assumed that there will be some rearranging of things.

Thanks for the input guys. It seems that I might have to get a power injector to make it work. I'll let you know if that works or not.

My brain only works in linear mode and I am incapable of making such a large intuitive leap so, I will have to wit for post #15

Oh ok I get it now. It's not quite #15, but I thought the OP was describing 2 different things, i.e. the cable runs he was talking about were going to be just for SAT, and he had decided to add in a third OTA line, so I guess I was looking for the most dumbed-down solution. Oh well. :)

Depending upon the attenna in use, It may function adequately without amplification.
