and want to know if rain iis still a problem with direct tv. i had D* around 1999-2000 and i only remember it going out a few times when it rained pretty hard. are the new sat dishes /equipment better and have less signal loss. also how bad does snow stick to the new dish. i live in ohio and we get a few good snow storms from December to the end of feb and wanted to know so i can try and have the dish installed in an easy place to get to if i need to clean it off. if they put the dish on my roof i would not be able to get to it as it's two high up. oh i'm getting the 5lnb dish and hr-20 hd dvr. thanks for any and all help

first off, congrats on your install on Friday. :)

so far as being a fellow Buckeye, snow has played a very rare roll with effecting my signal issue's so far (knock on wood). one thing i use that seems to help, i give the Dish a good coat of rain X during the fall season. But there also has been a few times i needed to gently brush the heavy wet snow off the dish, not because i lost signal completely. i just started to see some pixel issues with the weaken signal from the snow piling up.
rain fade is a little more dominate in the bad thunderstorms or very heavy rain just south of my location. but the signals always comes back relatively fast after the wall cloud passes. so far there's only been 1 or 2 times this has happened. i hope this helps some with your concerns.

How well your dish is aligned and peaked will determine how bad rain fade will affect you. The possibility of rain will always be there. It's an unfortunate variable w/ satellite. But it can be reduced significantly w/ a good Line of Site and good alignement.

Good Luck.
