View Full Version : Comcast versus Satellite question
Hi, I currently have Comcast, and maybe a year ago the programing became delayed (new compression?). For example, if I am watching a game on my tv, and call someone in another state watching the same game on a different network (like Time Warner), my game is about 7 seconds behind theirs.
Now this is a problem because I trade stocks for a living, and many times CNBC or Fox or whoever will move stocks. I cant play them anymore due to the delay.
So the question is: Can someone who has seen Comcast and satellite side by side tell me if Satellite lags as bad as Comcast?
Thanks!

Do you have a DVR? A DVR has an inherent delay since the content is always recorded and then played back even when watching what you think is "live" tv. This process takes a couple of seconds.

I would like to add I've noticed this with TWC as well. My TV with the HD DVR lags behind a tv with out a box. It's only about 5 seconds, but you can notice from one to another.

I was testing with no DVR (running cable directly from the wall). I imagine a DVR would just add more lag.

Ouch. Not looking good so far for Satellite. Anyone have any other comparisions? Preferable not an OTA comparision, since I assume my cable also lags OTA. Something like CNBC on cable versus sat would be ideal.
As a side note, this is not a local (Colorado) Comcast issue. Another trader in Michigan on Comcast has the same delay. And my friend in Minneapolis who used to have no lag on Time Warner Roadrunner, now gets the same delay as me when Comcast took over there.
