I am an installer for a company here in the Atlanta area. I am having a hard time installing the KaKu with the 103 sat coming in on a consistant basis. The HD-DVR's read all the other sats OK but the 103 comes in Failed! My stoopervisor tells me to hit the reset button and I end up in the customers house 2 hours after mounting the dish. After reseting the receiver the HD locals still do not come through.
Can anyone give me a hint on what I could be doing wrong to not get the 103?
Thanks,
Good Ole' SB

That almost always turns out to be a diplexer or a splitter somewhere in the line, or a wrong or bad multiswitch.

BBC's installed in the correct orientation and receiver activated to get the 103 transponders activated?

What do you mean by, "OK"? You should be in the 90's on almost all tp's on the 101 and 119. If you mean they're in the 70's, you may not get any 103 signals, (a) or (b), without further alignment.
Without even the BBC connected, you should be getting 103(a) signals in the mid-90's on tp 3 in Atlanta.

When I do the confirm sats. The tuner 1 and 2 as well as the 101, 110, 119 come in OK.

The BBC's are connected correctly as far as I know. This may sound stoopid but what are the correct orientation?

Hi Sebastian, it sounds like your "OK" response is to the SAT test, as opposed to the Signal Strength meters or the Transponder readings. What we're looking for to help you is Strengths and Individual Transponder readings.
Can you confirm you've done a software download, or have you not gotten that far yet?

Not stupid at all ;)
What is meant here is the cabling should be Dish>MultiSwitch (if present)>Cable to Receiver>BBC>Tuner Input on Back of Receiver.

Ok, step back take a deep breath.
Make sure you read the installation instuctions and watch the training video on the KA/KU dish. Videos found here: http://www.solidsignal.com/satellite/at9_install_videos.asp Instructions in the box.
Ok. Now read the instructions again. :)
Make sure that the mast is secure to a rafter or stud depending if its a roof/wall mount.
Make absolutely 100% sure that the mast is plumb. Not sorta plumb, but dead on plumb. Anything else than perfect will make things difficult later.
Preset the elevation and tilt based on the info that the HR20 gives you in the setup screens.
Use your meter and find the 101. Switch your meter to see if you also get the 119. If so good. Lock down the azimuth bolts on the back assembly.
Switch back to the 101. Now rough tune the elevation (find the peak). Do the same for the azimuth (use the azimuth fine tune).
Switch your meter to the 119. Now peak the 119 by adjusting the tilt. When found lock down the tilt adjustment nuts.
Now back to the 101. Follow the fine tune procedure listed in the instructions for both the elevation and azimuth. Set the elevation dial to 0. Turn the elevation adjustment bolt 2 full turns counter clockwise. Make note of the reading on your meter. Reset the dial to 0. Now turn the elevation bolt clockwise counting full and partial turns until you get that exact same reading. Take the number of turns divide by 2. Example 4.6 divide by 2 = 2.3 Reset the dial to 0. Now turn the adjustment bolt counter clockwise that number of turns. Lock down the elevation nuts. Elevation fine tuning is done. Repeat for the azimuth.
You need to run all four lines from the LNB to your ground block. Don't be lazy and run less than that if the customer is getting less than 4 tuners. Someone later will be calling you very bad names later if you don't run all 4.
Now if you are tieing into the customers exisiting lines note that you CAN NOT have any splitters or diplexers(*) on any of the lines that are going to a KA reciever. (*) I know some users have gotten things to work in a non-approved mannor with the arrangements of BBCs & diplexers. You WILL FAIL a field QC if you leave a diplexer inline.
Unless you are using a SWM, BBCs must be attached to each and every sat tuner on a KA box. The pigtail of the BBC goes to the box.
On the H20s make sure you select the 5 LNB dish AND the correct multiswitch. Use the 4x4 if you are not useing an external switch or the 6x8 if you are using a 6x8 or a 6x16. Only the Zinwell WB68 or WB616 is approved for use. Any other switch is NOT APPROVED and may or may not work. You will again FAIL A QC if you use anything other than a WB68 or WB616. If anyone tells you otherwise they are wrong. If in doubt, contact your regional field inspector. They will make things crystal clear.
No onto the signal levels. What you want to see is that your levels are consistant across all conus transponders on all sats. I'm happy with 90+. I can usually get steady mid 90s here in Cleveland.
Don't worry about any failed messages in the setups until the box is activated. The software will tell you stupid things at times. The HR20-100 will only show you 103a failed/ok until the box is activated. The H20 will show the 103 fail or the 99 fail depending on if its a 600 or a 100. It's normal.
Now that the box is active check your test channels.
480 - 103 B band Odd 13v
481 - 103 B band Even 18v
490 - 101 odd 13v
491 - 101 even 18v
492 - 119 odd 13v
493 - 119 even 18v
494 - 110 odd 13v
Now you can also check your 103b levels as well. They should be within a couple of points of your 101 levels.
Good luck.

Thanks. I've made a minor change to the fine tuning that works well for me. You find shortcuts after you do a couple of hundred of the things. :D
