View Full Version : Installation in the Rain?

I have my upgrade scheduled for this afternoon. It is raining here, not very hard, but the sky is pretty dark. Would this be cause for concern?
Will this make it difficult for the installer to get a good signal? Or prevent him from going on my roof to put up the dish?
I heard somewhere before that if you do the install in bad conditions, the signal strength won't go up when the sky clears because it considers the rain condition the normal condition. (this was from a directv installer in the past though)
thanks

Although the "normal condition" part is bogus, the installer probably won't do it in the rain. In fact, I doubt them going on the roof if it is wet.
Installers here do not install a dish in any type of rain, in my experience.

On the other hand, if they do install in the rain and they get good signal, you will know that rain fade won't be an issue for you.

I do have one issue around rain installs. Back years ago when my stereo store was installing DirecTV systems, we did one in the rain. We had problems a few years later with that system and eventually we traced it down to corrosion inside the F-fittings. Water got trapped in there and they rusted.
My current 5LNB install was done a few weeks ago in a light rain. It's pretty easy to get to my dish so some day soon, when it's sunny and warm, I am planning on disconnecting everything and letting the fittings dry out. I'm probably being overly cautious but I'll sleep better.
Installs can be done in the rain. There are parts of coastal Oregon and Washington that would have to cancel all appointments for 3 or 4 months every winter. Proper care and planning are important.

Mikey,
I'm pretty much directly south of you, on Long Island and had my installation canceled today (this is by someone that I hired to do the install, not a DirecTV contractor). It sounded like he was more concerned about the wind than he was the rain (which had stopped by the time I got the cancellation call).
I can't say that I'm too happy about it. But I understand and I'm probably better off in the long run.

the rain stopped and there is a lot of blue sky now. everything has pretty much dried out. Hope the installer comes in the earlier part of the install window.

There wouldn't be any installations in Seattle if they cancelled due to rain :)

I'm jealous. I had to reschedule for a week from Saturday (I can't take another day off next week).

their are two primary reasons for rain cancellations:
1) it is unsafe due to the condition of the installation
2) test electronics do NOT like water ... now if MY test equipment dies would YOU like to buy me replacements?????
