i'm thinking of getting direct tv and i know of one guy that has one hr20 left. should i get that one or the hr21 new one?
i was told by him that all locals will be in hd by end of december. the only reason i asked is cause i wanted to watch local tv in hd and didn't think i could do that with the hr21 as it doesn't have an OTA tuner
what you guys thoughts

The HR20 has OTA, but not the HR21. I would suggest HR20 if you want HD over the air (OTA) as a backup in case of inclement weather, if they offer HD in your market via satellite. It may not be available in all markets by the end of the year. So OTA is important for those who want locals until it can be offered.

If you want your locals in HD I would suggest going with the HR20 for the OTA tuner.
As far as all the MPEG4 HD locals launching be December is not correct. A lot of them will not launch until DirecTV 11 is launched and up and running. That will not happen until next year.

I was told in my local market it will be Jan or Feb. of 08 before I got local HD channels. MY DMA is 56, Little Rock, AR. My local sat. company is running out of HR20s!
Take the HR21...that leaves one more HR20s in the marketplace for the rest of us. LOL
But seriously, based on their current functionality, given the choice I'd take the HR20.

I was thinking of waiting till the end of the year to get one. but the way you guys are thinking, maybe I should just get it now so that way i know i will have my locals for sure with the OTA, i live in iowa, so will be on the bottom of th elist

What market are you in? Can you get locals via D*?
I only need OTA to pick up PBS in HD.

Not really, the old AT-9 dish is a little larger than the slimline and it has two jumper cables that connect SAT's 110 and 119 to the internal multi-switch. The slimline dish all LNB's are connected to the internal multi-switch without the jumper cables. That is it.

I think the HR21 is a little more attractive, but you should do what you think is best.

You can compare various receivers using the chart that tfederov put together:
