You really can't. I won't say it's 100% impossible, if you have the time and know EXACTLY what you're doing, you could probably do it, but for most people, it's not going to happen unfortunately.

It's possible, but not as easy as hooking them together via USB. You would need to ....

* "Record" your shows to your PC using its video capture hardware & software
* Convert that recording to the iPod's format
* Synch that recording into your iPod

I have used that method to transfer many movies from my DVR to my iPod (I have
also used the same method to transfer from DVDs which I was unable to rip).

You could burn a dvd with from the DVR and then use software to convert to the format needed. I haven't done from a burned DVD yet but it should work fine. There are dozens of software (some free) that convert formats to the iTouch one.

I have been shopping around for something similar. I want to archive some shows to divx from the sat dvr without sitting in front of a pc for hours - I have been looking at the usb tv tuners with onboard mpeg4 encoders like this one:

http://www.everythingusb.com/hardware/index/Plextor_ConvertX_PVR_PX-TV402U.htm

Granted it is not broadcast quality

- but for something to just view and delete might be handy.

so with the new TivoHD being able to automatically transfer files over a network to a PC, and then have those files automatically converted to a format viewable on an ipod, is there ANY hope that directv may have this feature one day in the not too distant future...I guess there's always hope,...so my real question has there been any talk of similar features to the tivoHD?

i'm thinking of getting an ipod touch, and was just hoping there would be a somewhat straightforward way of copying/moving files from my dvr to the ipod...

I would certainly love to see it too. Doesn't Dish have a feature that does this for some portable players?

In fact an update was just released for some Archos players that allows them to get content from Dish DVRs.

for that much hassle you may as well just download the shows you want already encoded from peer 2 peer file sharing site

Sure. Record them to a DVD. Then comver the DVD to the mp4 format.

I use this program: http://www.e-zsoft.com/

It's a sweet program.
