When I set up my new Slingbox, I ran into a problem getting it to work on one laptop running Norton 2006. Naturally, this was the computer on which I planned to use Slingbox the most.
After some tinkering, and much help from dbstalk, other websites, and Slingbox tech support, I have been able to get the SB to work with Norton--initially, only when hooked up to my home network, but now, fully functionally when connected to any broadband hookup.
Of course, I'm not completely sure which of the steps listed below was the critical fix, although Number 4 below is the last thing I did, and is perhaps the essential step. Perhaps all of them need to be done to get it to work. I have not experimented by removing any of these steps to see if the Slingplayer will still find my Slingbox. Please post your own experiences, especially if you have a quicker fix.
So here goes:
The problem: Slingplayer can't find my home Slingbox. I'm using a Slingbox AV, and my laptop has Norton Internet Security 2006, running on Windows XP.
What I did:
1. First, of course, verify that you've correctly entered your Finder ID and your password. If you have both a Slingbox password and an Administrator password, make sure the Administrator box is checked or unchecked to match.
2. Presuming you've already checked the settings, verify that Norton is causing a firewall problem by temporarily turning off Norton:
Open Norton Protection Center. If you see the Norton icon in your Desktop tray, backclick on the icon.
Select Open Norton Protection Center
Select Web Browsing
Select Personal Firewall
Select Turn Personal Firewall Off
A pop-up window will allow you to select the length of the shutdown; default is 5 minutes. Select OK.
3. Open Slingplayer and try to connect. If it plays now, the firewall is the problem.
Click on your Norton icon (now with a big red X), and select Fix Now.
4. Open Norton Protection Center. (see #2 above)
Select Web Browsing
Select Personal Firewall
Select Configure Personal Firewall
Check the box: Learn unrecognized programs that access the internet.
Select OK.
5. In Norton Protection Center main window, Select Options
Select Norton Internet Security
Open the Firewall tab
Check that you have the following ports. If any are missing, click on add, and add them one at a time.
Add these ports: 443, 5001, 5678 (Of these, 5001 is the one the Slingbox uses to access your computer. 5678 is a port on the Sling server, and I saw 443 listed on another website. I'm not sure if these two are essential, but they might be. So if you're nervous about opening extra ports, see if you can connect by adding only 5001.)
Select OK.
6. In Norton Protection Center main window, Select Web Browsing
Select Personal Firewall
Select Configure Personal Firewall
Open the Programs Tab
Under the list of programs, select Add
Your Program Files list will open. Click on Sling Media, Slingplayer, SlingPlayer.exe
Select Open, then OK. (Note: if you installed Slingplayer to a different folder, browse for it.)
Again, this worked for me. I hope it works for you. Please post your comments.
