Well the WD Caviar SE arrived, and Sunday I'll be installing it. Is it still the case that the dishplayer needs a straight connection to the 119 satellite during and after the telephone call to WebTV, or has that been fixed? In other words, do I need to bypass the SW21 before restarting the dishplayer with the blank drive?
Also, if I were instead to use virgin.dsk, would I be able to skip bypassing the switch?
Thanks in advance

You don't have to be direct to 199, just connected to a phone line.

You shouldn't have to do anything except install the drive and hookup the phone line. The only thing that you should know is that if it's a 7200 RPM drive, you might have a heat problem. I have tried 2 WD 7200 hard drives in my DP's and both failed after a month. A fan blowing on the unit might help.
BTW: Welcome to DBSTalk.com! :hi:

Well, the Caviar SE is a 7200RPM drive, but according to the review I read it is one of the cooler ones. I tried pretty hard to get an 80GB 5400RPM drive, and failed. The Caviar SE comes with a 3 year warranty (the reason I picked it out over the standard Caviar) so I'll take my chances with the heat. The DP is out in the open, not in a cabinet of any sort, so that should help.

You could always just stick a 120v muffin fan on top of the dishplayer (over the hard drive) - it would keep it plenty cool. Some of those fans are a rather noisy.
Try to take not of how hot the unit is before and after the drive swap.
I'vee been running a 120 gig 7200 rpm western digital for around a year without any problems.
