Nhl is in choice plus, the package that is $5 extra / mo.
Not included with sports pack.
I watched On the fly, I love the format they use, and it was great on VS during playoffs last year.
This is a nice channel add, D* even got me to upgrade my package to plus with this one.
I have the same audio sync issues, but it is still early.

For those not getting it, try to reauthorize your account...Sorry I lost the link, but:
*You can you to your online account and refresh your service on it. Go to customer service-->troubleshooting-->refresh your services-->check that receiver and click refresh service.

I think we just want our hockey and with the season having started already, now just isn't soon enough. However, D* did come through, as they continue this recent trend. The game looked excellent, but I agree about the studio thing. That should not be too hard to improve on.......keep up the good work D*!
Looks good - thanks for finally coming through, D*!!!

IMO, if Directv wants to do this right, they should make this channel accessible to ANYONE who purchased the CI package(at least thru the season), regardless if they have the "plus" package or not.

thank god for hockey 24/7. this is a great great day for hockey fans. i must say i am surprised though that they launched the sd and hd channel on the same day, figured the hd channel wouldn't come out till december for so.

Just got off the phone with a general CSR and a "Tech" csr. Neither had any idea as to why the SD signal is getting thru and the HD is not. They reauthorized my account and resent info to my receivers, but no luck. THe tech guy said he is sending the info over to the "main command center", as this was the first time he heard of the problem and did not have any talking points to share with me regarding fixing this. Seeing that this just launched today, I suspect that bugs are present.
To add more intrigue - my HR20-700 was updated overnight to 0X1B4. Don't think that means much, as I did a reset this morning on that unti, as well as a reset on the HR20-100 in my Family room. Neither was successful in obtaining the HD signal after the reboot...

There is a Great Pumpkin. I waited in the pumpkin patch all night last night, fell asleep and when I woke up, there it was. The HD is clear and bright (some studio feed at lower def, but an okay attempt to upconvert). Hockey highlights in HD are awesome. And surprisingly enough, SD channel is there as well. I do not have Home Ice pak, but do have grandfathered Pre - Choice with HD and Sports Pak. 24/7 Hockey, and a live game on tonight to check quality of delivery, unless I'm blacked out. Sometimes I wonder why I spend the extra for the Sports Pak. Anyway, thanks D* for the delivery. Now, keep them coming.

Sweet. So here's a question, I see that the Columbus vs. L.A. game tonight is listed as being available both on NHL Network and channel 94 in HD. Will this actually be 2 different feeds, or does the carriage on NHL Network just mirror a broadcast from an RSN?

Just a thought..
The NHL Network that Directv broadcasts (from reports read here) is exactly the same as the Canadian version.
The NHL Network is part of TSN (the Canadian ESPN).
TSN broadcasts HD hockey games in Canada during the week, some of which are shown on Center Ice in SD.
Obviously the infrastructure is in place to receive the HD signal from The NHL Network / TSN.
If my logic is correct, Directv should then be able to show HD feeds of TSN hockey games on Center Ice.
Let's do it.
Ge wiz, Mostly Pittsburgh (6) and Detroit(6) on the schedule. Some teams only twice.
I would hope they consider changing that. It seems like Pittsburgh and Detroit are always featured in this style of programming. For example, Pittsburgh seemed to be on 94 in HD 80% of the time last year. And when NBC does it's Sunday coverages - it always seems to be Detroit, Pittsburgh, The Devils, Dallas, and CO.
Don't get me wrong, watching Crosby, Malkin, and Stahl is a good thing, but with the proliferation of channel choices now, the NHL in conjunction with D* should work to showcase other teams to help grow support for the entire league - not just the teams that have a few top names players.
The NHL is a different sport and has a different style of fan base than that of say the NFL - where the Cowboys, Giants, and Indy seem to get a lot of prime time coverage. IMO the NHL's audience has a greater capacity to value teams and matchups beyond they're hometown or "favorite team.

12:07 p.m. -- The NHL Network is replaying the Thrashers/Canadiens game from last night ... and it said, "this game is being presented in TSN HD." Sooooooooo how come (even the replay) it has pillar bars on the left and right, on my HD version of the channel? Seems if it was originally presented in HD, it shouldn't be hard to replay it in HD.
Semi-off note ... I noticed on Monday that the NFL Network fancied up their pillar bars just a little bit with mesh-honeycomb-looking screening.

I just got off the phone with D* and they fixed my problem. This was the specific problem:
I only have the old Total Choice but I do have Center Ice. I was told that the NHL Network is part of the Total Choice Plus/Xtra package, but it should also be authorized for CI customers as well. There appears to be a problem in their programming / tiers that it is only authorizing the SD feed for CI customers.
What they had to do to fix the problem was they upgraded me to XTRA to confirm I could get the channel, he then said he made some packaging change to add the HD channel to the CI package / tier then switched me back to my old package.
I now get both the HD and SD feeds.
So according to D*, you should only get the NHL Network if you either have Total Choice Plus / Xtra and/or subscribe to the CI package.
Hope this helps those of you that are not receiving the channel but think you should be receiving it.
I do find it odd that I get Big Ten, NFL and NBA (none of which I care about) just fine, always have, but the one channel I was really looking forward to is in a higer package then the one I get. Oh well, but at least it's working now.

Not exactly the same. The live games are different in Canada...and there is no HD version of the channel up there. For all I know, the upconversion to HD is happening in the US.
Since E* doesn't show any HD games from Canada -- and they try to show every feed they can -- I would guess that there are licensing issues unique to the HD games from Canada.

We will have to see to be sure. However, note that last Friday night's game that we saw on NHL Network here in the states during the free preview was not carried in Canada.
Not surprising they are showing US teams up there on NHL Network. Canada already has contracts in place (CBC/TSN/Sportsnet/LeafsTV/PPV...) for all games involving their teams.
Since it appears NHL Network simply retransmits an RSN feed for live NHL games, I would think the game would be blacked out on NHL Network (in the appropriate market(s)) to force people in those areas to watch the RSN feed. I say this because the intermission report for NHL Network games is different than the RSN and they need their ad dollars.
I also think it would be quite funny to see an MSG HD or FSN NY HD feed on NHL Network. Actually, this may happen on Nov 14. Rangers play the Devils.. how will NHL Network handle that one?

Funny thing is, about a half hour later I got an email from DirecTV about a change in my service. I immediately checked online but my programming shows my old programming (before he mucked around with it) - so it looks correct. And I did try tuning into some of the other Xtra/Plus channels and all are 721, so should be ok.

It'll be an RSN broadcast. The Kings RSN broadcast will be in SD, the Jackets broadcast will be in HD. FSN West = SD. FSN Ohio = HD.
(Why FSN is allocating HD bandwidth for an away team's broadcast while the home team gets stuck with SD is a whole other frustrating topic.)

Do you have a 5 LNB dish, a bband converter and one of the newer HD receivers (H20, H21, HR20, HR21) and the HD Access fee ($9.99 a month)? If yes, you probably just need to have the cards "re-hit" and authorized again.

im glad its available for SD...i wrote them a nasty letter via their customer support area on Direct TV, they gave me a canned answer..
in it I told em that Cable has 1 up on them for not having the channel since day 1 of US operations. also said guess cable is trying to save face for the continued absence of NFLN and Big-10. But with their announcement that it'd be for HD clientele only, said to me that they were playing favorites and profiling those that spend more money on HD..I said i should be in the pecking order here as wll being ive had NFL sunday ticket for 2 years. and thanked em for reminding me what cable was all about...in conclusion Cable has it for everybody via their sports pack and not limited to HD clientele.
I thanked em for being cable all over again , in that
1. dont have a channel on the lineup when it begins broadcasting
2. if they were to follow their quotes and put NHLN for SD in 2008 instead of parallel when HD gets it..shows who takes preference that a select few get it, and others later.
Well Direct TV ya sure shut me up quick..Should I thank you for putting NHL Network on so boldly and silently, probably not, cause you should of had it from the ONSET for SD & HD. after all if Fox Business and the many shopping services you have on why should a sports channel fall to the bottom of the order..
Nice move DTV...dont let it f+++in happen again..

Was it me or was that game(Columbus vs Anaheim) NOT on the regular CI channels? I'm curious of people on other providers who don't have the NHL network, but have CI, got that game last night.
good to see replays from games but would be neat to have a more detailed show of the goals and what the play by play and color guys said post the goal or analysis by the NHL network folks of each goal. Would love to see it develop into a great network for NHL fans

I don't want to be a wise guy but could you provide a link for this game bring shown on The NHL Network ?
I don't find it listed as bring broadcast on this channel's schedule.

I will answer my own question : :
I did some more research and noticed that I had not looked at the complete schedule.... at the bottom it does say the following:
NHL Network's Fan Favourite Game Options
Sunday, Oct. 14 - Detroit at Los Angeles or Minnesota at Anaheim - 8 p.m. ET
Wednesday, Nov. 14 - NY Rangers at New Jersey or Chicago at Columbus - 7 p.m. ET
Monday, Dec. 31 - St. Louis at Detroit or San Jose at Minnesota - 7 p.m. ET
Thursday, Jan. 24 - Anaheim at Los Angeles or St. Louis at San Jose - 10:30 p.m. ET
Friday, Mar. 14 - Carolina at Buffalo or NY Rangers at Florida - 7:30 p.m. ET

Just went through this on Saturday. Got the same 721 msg and the CSR had me so confused I had absolutly no idea as to what I needed to do, or if I was to be receiving NHL Net with my old total choice program. I hung up and then called the customer retention group and explained what had happened with the CSR and she very pleasantly walked me through the whole programing bit. NHL Net is offered in the Choice Extra and above packages. So I needed to pay the $7.00 difference in monthly fee. But, she then showed me how the Plus HD DVR package was a buck cheaper. It offered the same channels and the HD and DVR service, is an inclusive package. So, I'm actually only paying $6.00 a month more for about 50 additional channels, most of which I will probably never watch, but I now receive NHL Net. Then, by doing so, she's giving me a monthly credit of $10.00, for a year, because I was one of the old Total Choice customers. So, my monthly bill will be cheaper by $4.00 for the next year, and I have additional channels, and I have NHL Net. :D
Later, as a follow up, I had to call Customer Retention again, because the first rep that I spoke to, had not re-activated the DVR access. :nono2:
If you go through this process, make sure that they put the DVR access in there. It was explained to me that it will still show as a line item on my bill, but with zero dollars.

Satelliteracer, will I be blacked out on wed. for the Redwings game on Nhl net.? Since it is on my local rsn fsn detroit? If so can you look into the issues we have had with fsn detroit lately for example we have had alot of games typically home ones that are scheduled to be hd and they are not. Last night was a disapointment as it was the Pistons home opener and fsn was. advertising it in hd and well it wasn't.

Agreed - please remove the banner, or at the very least, squish the action vertically so that the bottom 10% of the screen isn't covered up. On several occasions I couldn't read the graphic being shown on the broadcast because it was hidden by that useless "ticker".
Despite that, I'm loving the non-stop game night coverage and 24 hour hockey content. Especially the "Hockey Academy" series.

Well, I got a response from the Manager of Communications for the NHL, when I questioned the programing. He said that there are 40 scheduled live game to be aired in Canada on the NHL Network. He also stated that there is currently 50 live regular-season games in addition to their regular programing line up, to be aired in the US.
As far as which games were to be aired live he stated: "To ensure fans recieve the best match-ups, NHL Network's game telecast schedule will be released on a monthly basis." He then offered the following games to be aired in the US for the month of November, subject to change, of course. Then, I'm not real certain how we find out which games will be aired each month. Perhaps I'll write to ask him that.
Wednesday, Nov 7 Nashville @ Detroit 7:30 ET/4:30 PT
Friday, Nov 9 Toronto @ Buffalo 7:30 ET/4:30 PT
Wednesday, Nov 14 Edmonton @ Vancouver 10:00 ET/7:00 PT
Friday, Nov 16 Montreal @ Buffalo 7:30 ET/4:30 PT
Sunday, Nov 18 Detroit @ Columbus 5:00 ET/2:00 PT

Friday, Nov 30 Dallas @ Pittsburgh 7:30 ET/4:30 PT

Versus has an exclusive window
Just to clarify, this exclusive window only applies to US teams. That is why, last night, on CI, we WERE able to watch Toronto @ Ottawa(2 Canadien teams), but we were NOT able to see Washington @ Atlanta. I'm not sure the exclusivity lasts all night either, but not sure on this(meaning there is a possiblility if Versus covered a 7pm game, the 10pm+ games can be shown elsewhere and vice versa).
I really hate the NHL for scheduling "other" games, besides the "Versus exclusive" game, at the same time, thus depriving not only general NHL fans of a game, but the fans of the US teams that you cannot see, because of Versus's exclusive window.
If the NHL wants to dole out an exclusive window, fine, but then DON'T schedule other games, at that same time.

It wasn't that they were showing a different game, they weren't really showing any game. I pay for Center Ice to see the Red Wings play. I could really care less about the other games. I called D* to point out the problem - I was hoping they would put the game on one of the Center Ice channels. I didn't catch them saying it was technical difficulties on the NHL Network because I was flipping around to different channels to see if D* had flipped it on somewhere else. I'm not sure why they can't have it on the CI channels anyway, even if it is on the NHL network. It's not like the NHL network is filming the game. They are obviously getting their feed from FSN.

Then you end up with schedules like the Islanders have. One game, then 6 days off, another game then 7 days off, a game, then 4 days off... Then January comes, and the games are back to back and every other night...

I would bet the reason this game is "Canada only" is that only the SD feed is available to The NHL Network.
The NHL network is not shown in HD in Canada.
So, they're just not gonna show a game because it isn't in HD?

They had a "Canadian only" broadcast earlier that was only in SD. Maybe they think that by not showing an SD game on a HD channel saves them from hearing alot of bitching.

I am very disappointed in the NHL network so far.
The ticker at the bottom hasnt been updated since the launch. I actutally like the ticker on the NHL network from Canada. During the day it gives nhl news and transactions and during the evening or whenever games are going on it give very up to date scores, and all goals and assisits. Since they are using TSN's broadcasters for NHL on the Fly, why couldnt they use TSN's ticker?
There seems to be no hd content at all - except for live games once or twice a week. The pillar box screen is awful to watch. I actually like the SD feed better most of the time. I even saw 1 or 2 live games with those stupid vertical lines down the each side of the screen. Even if the feed isn't HD I am pretty sure they could format the screen like ESPN does when showing non HD programming. Would it be so hard to shift the pillar box to the left and use the rest of the screen to show standing, stats etc. Who is producing this channel? An ex fast food restaurant manager?
NHL network should get thier act together. This is an embarassment to the NHL when you compare it to the NFL and NBA.

That is only partially true. Had the channed started from scratch then I could accept its current state. But they started with a base to work with and made it worse!?. How can anybody justify that? I am pretty sure the NBA and NFL channels were better at launch than the NHLHD channel and they didn't have a format to start with. The fact that I would choose to watch the Canadian SD feed over the us HD feed (except when a game is on) should speak volumes. I am pretty sure just about any hockey fan out there would agree with me if they had the same options as I do.

I understand this is an HD thread but I have to say I am enjoying the NHL Network in SD, which is all I have right now. Yes it could be better, especially the ticker at the bottom which is annoying but all in all this channel is a real blessing for hockey fans. Let's give thanks it is here rather than kicking at it. I personally enjoyed being able to see the HOF ceremonies last night also; although I DO agree, the channel IS a little lame thus far......the ticker is essentially useless, plus ANNOYING SAME commercials OVER and OVER!!!!
I wish they'd show more hockey. Heck, even if they should show some AHL games..better than just talk shows.
Was the ceremony actually in HD? I can't record it until, I think, tonight. And why can't they get rid of that huge banner at the bottom. It's been a while now, we know what we're watching. It takes up too much space.
Ceremony wasn't on HD. Also, it wasn't televised on NHL Network in Canada. It was televised on TSNa (digital alternate channel that few even know exist). It will be televised on TSN on 7:30 ET on Wednesday in Canada.
NHL Network Signs Broadcast Extension Of ECHL Game Coverage
Deal Includes 22 'Game Of The Week' Match-ups, All-Star Game And Kelly Cup Playoffs
TORONTO – NHL Network today announced it has reached a one-year extension for broadcast rights to games of the ECHL, a league with affiliations with 26 of the 30 NHL franchises and 26 of 29 American Hockey League (AHL) clubs. The broadcast package provides NHL Network in Canada and the U.S. with 22 'Game of the Week' match-ups throughout the remainder of the 2007-08 season, airing Saturdays at 7 p.m. ET. The deal also includes the Chase Chevrolet ECHL All-Star Game and the Kelly Cup Playoffs.
This is the sixth consecutive year of ECHL action on NHL Network (see complete broadcast schedule below).
NHL Network's broadcast schedule gets underway on Saturday, Nov. 17 with Alaska @ Idaho at 7 p.m. ET. Highlights of the network's schedule include nine games featuring the defending Kelly Cup champion Idaho Steelheads, live coverage of the 16th annual ECHL Chase Chevrolet All-Star Game on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008 and the Kelly Cup Playoffs in Spring 2008. Over the years, 333 former ECHL players have suited up in the NHL.
This marks the second broadcast agreement this week for NHL Network, which previously unveiled a 20-game broadcast package with the AHL for the 2007-08 season.
Note - the schedule is on NHL.com. I wish they'd also show some AHL games.

What are you refering to here? Nhl.com having AHL schedule or NHL Network showing AHL games?
AHL schedule (I didn't know they carried AHL games) on the NHL website.
AHL schedule (I didn't know they carried AHL games) on the NHL website.

Well count me as one likes the NHL Network and is glad Direct picked it up, but I also think the near-constant advertisement that takes up a huge portion of the bottom of the screen is both intrusive and annoying. They keep scrolling the same thing over and over and over again! :(
No scores, no NHL info, just the same repetitive ads. Yuck. And it hides info or game action on occasion.
Thank goodness it wasn't on during the Edmonton/Vancouver game Wednesday night.
Does anyone happen to still have the letter that D* sent the NHL CI subs back in early October?? In the mailing, there was mention of a discount for NHL CI subs if they place an order at shop.nhl.com. I think it was something like 10% or something. I can't find this letter anymore, but want to place an order and save some $$$.
The mailing was one of those 'the NHL season is soon starting and we want to thank you for subscribing again' letters. I think it was the same one that included those little NHL team decal stickers for our remotes. If anyone has this mailing still and can let me know (either in a response here or PM) what this special discount was for, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.

Tonight we get the TSN HD feed for the Sabres/Canadians game but no HD.
I was wondering which feed it was. It's blacked out here in Buffalo. If it was the MSG HD feed (which the Sabres home games are available in), then it would make me feel better about having the Sabres home games in HD once the D*/MSG situation is resolved.

It IS in HD from the TSN HD feed.
My NHL Netork channel was stuck on SD had to change channels back and forth and the HD showed up.
This is why I deleted my previous post.
The HD from the game is great, but the studio protion between the periods, looks like upconverted SD, is so blurry it hurts my eyes.
