Hello all! Infrequent poster longtime lurker! I was wondering if someone can help me out getting my HR20-700 hooked up to the net? I have a wired netork connected through a Belkin router. When I try to connect through the setup menu everything is good except for the connection to the internet. It does say that it is connected to the network but no internet.
When I hooked up my XBox360 it had a place where I could put in my username and PW to my ISP (I have Verizon DSL), but I see nothing like that here. At first I thought it was a firewall issue but I turned the Firewall of and get the same message.
I also reset the receiver and no luck on that either.
I am pretty computer savvy but not when it comes to networking!!:(
Thanks in advance
Craig

Do you use a router connected to your DSL modem? If so, you might be able to store the username and PW there. This way, the HR20 is always on the Internet. You need that always-on for DoD to work best.

Im trying to figure out, if he had a belkin router, why would he be logging in on his XBOX?

I did that, in they type of connection listed on the router setup page I have PPoE selected and then I input all my info such as P/W and other stuff. I went and check the internet connection box properties and checked the box that says to share my internet conection. Still no joy, it;s connecting to the router but not to the internet!
I honestly think its my router. When I hokked iy up according to the instructions it would not connect to the internet itself, I called Belkin tech support and the tech had me take the net cable that was coming from the modem to the "green" port and move it to one of the four "blue" ports that all the periphails use. Plus the darn thing will never take a firm ware update.
As far as the 360 gies it gave me a place to put the info, I did it worked so I never thought about it.
P.S. please excuse any spelling errors its real early and I just got up!!!!!:hurah:

The cable that comes from your modem, goes to one of the LAN ports on the back of your router?

and Belkin TOLD you to do that?
Assuming you havent customized your router much (which it sounds like you dont know much about customizing your router, no offense), if DHCP is on, then its sending an address back to your modem, which is just going to piss eachother off (like fighting fire with fire, everyone gets burned and noone advances!)...

Hate to say it, but call your ISP and tell them you want to bridge your modem, they'll help you configure the modem end, and then hook up your belkin back to the GREEN port. You may have to reboot each device a few times...

If DHCP is off, then your modem would be broadcasting public IPs over the routers LAN, treating the router like a switch (you may think of it more as a multiswitch, lol). Thats why you could enter your information on the XBOX and have it pass... You'd have to put in your PPoE info on all devices you wanted to have online, and your ISP would probably charge you more since you'd have a public IP on up to 4 devices.

Another thing to consider is replacing your Belkin router with another brand. When I went wireless, I bought a Belkin router but returned it when I discovered it would only allow me to forward a single port to a computer on my network. I replaced it with a Netgear which has no such restriction.

PPPoE can be a pain. Fortunately the ISPs I have used didn't employ that. In any case, a decent router should be able to handle it for you with no need to run it on the connected devices.

Thanks for the answer, Yes the Belkin tech told me to do that!! When I get home from work I will call my ISP and have them bridge the modem and we'll try again. Thanks again for your help

Which verizon modem do you have? I had a similar problem get my router based parental controls to work (my router needed to be the gateway). In my case, the modem verizon gave me (modem/router combo) didn't offer a transparent bridging. Verizon had their own firmware installed and I had to change back to the original manufacter's firmware to get it to work.

You say that the receiver is getting connected but no internet. What IP address, DNS and gateway settings are showing up for the receiver. A 169 address for example is not going to work. Perhaps you can make a DHCP reservation in your router for your receiver, ensuring it gets the same ip each time it connects. DNS and gateway must also be set for the internet portion to work.

No offense but I beleive thats a teeny bit over the OPs head...
And I dont have an HR20, would you be able to guide (us) to get into the menu to get the networking info?

would you be able to guide (us) to get into the menu to get the networking info?

Help & Setup - Settings - Network - Advanced Settings

Once you have completed this, Reset the Default settings, otherwise you will have a manual IP address.
