Media Savvy: Kings, UPN-31 butting heads over TV rights
Did UPN-31 (KMAX) commit a technical foul during last season's National Basketball Association playoffs? The Sacramento Kings seem to think so and have gone to arbitration because of it, with the goal of voiding their contract with the station.
If the Kings are successful, it would bring an immediate end to the team's relationship with UPN-31, which has broadcast Kings games since 1988.
At the very least, multiple sources say, the Kings and UPN-31 will part ways upon the conclusion of the current season this spring, when all of the team's broadcast contracts expire.
"The bottom line is that the Kings won't be back on KMAX next year," one source says.

The dispute with UPN-31 apparently centers on its programming during the Kings' playoff run last May and June.
During the playoffs, the station aired several pre-and post-game editions of its morning show, "Good Day Sacramento."
But the Kings saw nothing good about the specials.
