I got an HD brochure in the mail yesterday. It shows all of the channels that they are now offering.

It also states that as of 12/15, HDNet, HDNet Movies, MGM HD, MHD, Smithsonian Channel HD & UHD are going to cost an additional $5 per month!

Not only that, but I have premier for $99 per month. I have to pay an extra $10 for HD access. If I wasn't being grandfathered, they charge premier users the DVR fee too.

It seems to me that the Premier package should include the HD & DVR fee. I'm going to give D* until the end of the year to fix this, otherwise I'm going to drop to the PLUS HD DVR package for $69 / month, which will save me $40/month since this includes the HD access (& DVR fee).

I still don't know if I'll shell out the $5 for the HD Extra Pack.

... You're pretty much losing the premium channels (HBO CMX STARZ SHO).
Im considering it... But Im now addicted to 3/4 of the showtime series, and my family likes HBO, so... It's almost not worth it because I'd be adding the premium packages right back!

i voted yes & would also like to see if
a sub has premier & NFLST then the HD
sould be included without having to get STSF...
but if the sub wanted all the interactive featues
then fine charge extra for that...IMHO

"YES" for HD Access, "NO" for DVR service. One has nothing to do with the other.

A loaded poll,

Let me see do I think I should pay more or less....:whatdidid?

I voted less. Premier should be all inclusive.

Sorry but I vote NO. Costs have to be covered. Over the last few years the base packages have had to have a price increase to cover programming cost increases. This year the HBO package went to a straight $13. Yet the Premier package has remained $99. If you want the additional service it has to be paid for. If you want an all inclusive one-fee-pays-all then make your voice heard at D*, but don't expect the price to remain $99. As for D* making money - I like profits. I would like for my stock in D* to continue to rise, thank you.

If you want it to continue to rise, then you had better hope Directv doesn't price themselves right out of their profits. I know they will be LOSING money on me, come Dec 16th. I've already discussed this with my wife. With them nickel and diming me on the extra $5 for the set of HD channels, while I will be getting the package, it's se la vie(sp?) to the Premiere pak, when they start charging and I'll be downgrading.

Everyone has a price limit and they have already hit mine.

i have made my voice heard about having to pay
an additional 99$ for superfan to get HD games
especially beens that is really the only feature of
SF i use....why cant they at least have 2 tiers of
SF...an HD only for lets say 19.99 & the whole
enchilada for 99...

meant to also say for premier subs only...
would this hypothetical offer not cause
some ST subs to switch to premier...at least
for the FB season...& maybe after 5-6 months
some may decide to keep premier

I think Premere should include everything, but it is unrealistic to think it would stay $99 then. They have never included the $9.95 HD package in the Premier level so it is not like they are taking that away.

I will say the shifting of the channels to the HD extra pack does seem a little like piling on though. Why not just say that the HD pack is now $12 and includes everything. They would probably make more that way as I see lots of people ditching the Extras considering how much other stuff is in HD now.

Meh.

If they include it, they would raise the price.

No vote for me as it is a wash.

I abstain.

Does anyone sincerely think that if Premier were all inclusive... that they wouldn't just raise the price $10?

ala carte pricing ...it's better to watch them strip packages and tack on fees this way...at least no one can figure out how much they're paying for anything.

I'm really tired of the nickle of diming. I'm tired of the extra receiver fees, dvr fees, hd access fees, and now HD Extra pack fee. It's dumb because the consumers will eventually say NO. As a consumer I don't want to know any more than I want HD channels, basic channels, and other premium services I want. It's too complicated for the average non-technical consumer to understand. And when people don't understand they get ticked off and just cancel their service.

+1. Doesnt include enough options

paulman182

It should be included even if they do raise the price.

Having DVR service included in a lower package and not this one is silly. Premier (or some top package) should make it unnecessary to worry about add-ons.

I'm still hoping for All-Access...

Do you think all this HD is free to DirecTV?
Do you think all the equipment to make HD possible is free?
Do you think that throwing it all into premier would allow them to pay for it all?

BTW: Nice poll options.

How about a third option: They should create an ALL ACCESS package, that includes everything (Premier plus DVR and HD ACCESS).

I voted, but I agree the options do not represent the valid possibilities.

I have Premier. Every month I look at my bill, and I sit down and figure out how much it would cost if I dropped to a lower package and only added back the premium channels I actually watch. At the moment, because the DVR fee is grandfathered into the package, I'm at the point where I could save about $6 a month and lose 2 premium packages. So at this point, it's not worth the change. But if they ever drop the DVR inclusion (charge extra for it), then it no longer becomes a debate, I'll downgrade.

As was noted, I've reached the limit of what I can (or at least am willing to) spend on television programming.

no i don't expect HD to be totally free....but
face it a lot of people are making lots of $$
on this because of being somewhat still new...
for exanple....look at the OTA antennas that are
advertised as HDTV antennas...like you have to have
this special antenna in order to get OTA HD...

eventually this will all get ironed out i am sure...
but until then people are going to make as much
hay while the sun shines

I apologize to everybody that feels the poll was biased.

What I was trying to point out is that D*'s Premier package, which is their top of the line (excluding Titanium) should include everything. If they need to raise the price of the package $10 (or whatever), that is their choice, and then the subs can decide if it is worth it. But they should not be adding additional fees for programming on top of the base price.

So should they increase the cost of premier by $10... and leave those that are premier subscribers that dont' have HD... pay that extra $10 for something they can't access?

I do think the right solution is to create another package on top of premier that includes the two fees, at a modest discount.

I see what you're saying, and I agree. It didn't even occur to me that people that subscribe to premier may not have HD or DVRs. So that being the case, they should have another package above premier that includes the fees.

Wow.

I refuse to choose one of those options and instead write in my own unreasonable demands.

I think that for $99 a month, premier should give me everything DirecTV offers - dvr fee, hd access, hd extra, all standard and premium programming, all a-la-cart programming, all PPV movies and premium events, all international channels, NFL Sunday Ticket, MLB Extra Innings, NBA League Pass, NHL Center Ice, NASCAR Hot Pass, ESPN Game Plan, ESPN Full Court, Mega March Madness, MLS Direct Kick, Setanta Sports, Cricket Ticket, and anything else I might have forgotten. Plus I demand free equipment, free service calls and premium support, my own personal CSR available 24/7 without delay . :D

I think that covers it.

I just looked it up on Wikipedia myself. I didn't realize how old a phrase it is. It's 300 years old. My mother always used it. She was a master at giving me a Hobson's choice but then, most mothers are. I could do it her way or....her way. :D
