I have a buddy that lives in Eagle, Id, and he tells me that he dosen't want to upgrade to HD because when they install it they need to add a second dish:eek2: . Is this true? Or are the installers just being lazy? I don't think I know of any one with clear LOS that needs two dishes. How 'bout some advice?

There are some locations in the country that need 2 dishes, one to be able to get locals.
I just don't know which parts of the country. Even w/ a 5-LNB. He still may need 2.
I think the SAT slots are 72 and 95 degrees.
Someone will correctly me if I'm wrong. Hopefully gently. :p

Yeah, but if so, he would already need two for SD locals, correct? (Are there HD locals coming from somewhere other than 99/103?)
So an additional dish wouldn't be needed for HD (just upgrading the main dish to a Slimline).
Boise SD LIL appear to be on 72.5, so two dishes would be required for SD LIL. If your friend forgoes LIL service, then a single behemoth dish should work just dandy.
HD LIL isn't available in Boise yet.

Hi Bill,
I'm just South of Eagle, in Meridian, ID and that answer is Yes and No.
Likely the D* installers are wanting to put in a 2nd dish for the 72.5 Satellite so your bud can get SD locals via the Sat. This is not a wrong assessment, and probably has nothing to do with line of sight unless he lives in a hole in the ground ;)
Your friend can potentially avoid the 2nd dish if he wants to install an antenna for OTA, which he would then get in HD and would have no need for the 2nd dish, unless he also has SD receivers that have no Antenna input.
Go ahead and send me a Private Message, Bill, and I'd be glad to talk your friend through his options ;)

I don't know anything about the "other two" SAT locations. But if that is the case he already has two i would imagine. 1 for the SD locals and 1 for seeing SAT 101.
Right?

It's also possible the previous install didn't even include a local dish - depends on how long ago it was done, as even SD locals didn't come to LiL until a few years back. Possible he even has Cable for his locals.
Yes, many medium/small market markets are at 72.5......I have had two dishes since switching to directv and it works fine...they will add a zinwell WB68 and you will be all set

Within a year or so he won't need the second dish since the 72.5-deg satellite channels are being migrated to the "main" satellites.

Exactly litzdog. So an OTA solution in this area, if it's possible and affordable, is the best intermediate answer if you want all HD and can get a signal from the towers at the top of the local mountain ;). And Eagle has a very good chance. :) Know it well.
EDIT: and, of course, no HR21! ;)

Locals in Local or some crazy crap like that.
I think it's actually Locals Into Locals (local stations into the local market). I had to ask the exact same question a year or so ago:lol:
