there really is not an "off" for the HR20... when you press the power button.. it only shuts down the audio/video outputs on the unit and turns the led lights on the front off... it has no effect on the hard drive or pending recordings...

the HR20 is actually still recording (buffering) when it is off... when you turn it back on... you are still able to rewind as far back into the 90 minute buffer as you would like...

thanks for the quick replies and info. i guess i will just do the one button turn off tv/dvr, which i must say is cool (my stupid cable remote i could not get it programed correctly to turn my tv off and on ,but the D* one works perfect) thanks again

I leave mine on... I have two TV's attached to it and want the receiver on to service both displays... If both displays are on, I don't want either location to turn it off...otherwise it impacts the other viewers on the other display...

I leave mine "on" (not in standby) as well. The reason is pretty minor but something to consider:

If you have it paused on a recorded show and put it in standby, it will default back to live tv when it comes out of standby. I have accidentally seen scores to games that I was recording because of this "feature". If you instead leave it paused on a previously recorded show and leave it on (not in standby) when you turn off your tv, it will still be paused when you go back to it later - not playing live tv.

... or you can tune to an XM channel & turn it off. Since XM channels don't buffer, maybe you'll give the drive a rest?

Sounds like a good idea, are you sure the drive goes to rest?

I'm guessing then it saves on some electricity consumption?

I don't remember the numbers, but I hooked my HR20 to a Kill-a-watt meter several months ago to check. There was negligible difference between on and standby (the LEDs don't use very much power).

actually, no... it draws 0.027kw 'on or off'... it's still performing even when in standby... see my post #4...

Interesting........I guess it doesn't matter in the long run if on or off.

I am considering a seagate free agent pro 500gb or 750 gb a a replacement on my HR20-100 for more storage.

If I put the main unit (the hr20) into standby mode, will that power down the external HD?

you should have no problems with your external drive if you put the hr20 in standby... the freeagent pro has its own power supply... and the esata plug on the hr20 will remain active so your recordings will still record..

No, won't power down the external HD.

I do know that putting the HR20-700 in standby will cause a drop in its temperature by 2-3 degrees after an hour or so, in my experience.
