View Full Version : Steaming NFL games online Via direct tv's new service when you are unable to get DTV
I live in an apartment that I am unable to recieve direct TV (my balcony doesn't face the correct direction to recieve the signal, and I am not allowed to attach the dish on the side of the building).
I have been emailing the NFL for years asking why they didn't allow steaming video of NFL games online and charge for the service like MLB does. I never got a response from them on this matter.
I was researching to see if game online this weekend and I saw that if you sign up for Direct TV, and order NFL Sunday Ticket, along with Superfan you get live streaming games online for free.
I have emailed Direct TV asking why they don't allow a stand alone account just to sign up for this service. I explained that in cases like mine they are only gaining customers that they wouldn't have anyways. I was also directed to post in here by a current Direct TV customer about this issue.

Cause DirecTV uses the NFL games as a way to maximize their subscriber base and thus other revenues. Additionally, I doubt they have the rights to do so.

The sunday ticket is their product. Why would they be allowed to stream the games at all if the NFL is not allowing them to?
Also they would be maximizing their subscriber base by adding this service online. They would be adding customers that they would never have had in the first place.

Actually I believe Sunday Ticket is the NFLs. D* only has carriage rights for it, they don't own it.

Ok, then who as a fan do I need to contact in the NFL office to actually get a reply?
"NFL Sunday Ticket" is owned and copyrighted by:

DirecTV currently licenses the service from the NFL for distribution in the USA, but does not have any ownership of the name, service, or product. The current contract expires in 2010. The product is licensed to many other providers outside of the USA.

There are people this season who subscribe to the most basic of DIRECTV offerings and NFL ST just for the streaming video. They never even put up a dish.
An expensive solution, but one that can work.
Cheers,
Tom

if I am not mistaken the ticket is a 2 year contract. What is the point of buying a service you can't watch other than the streaming content. That is rediculous.

I think you can opt for a 18 month contract and you are right, it is a ridiculous option unless you're very well off :)
Easier to move so you can have both.

Cant you suspend your service for up to 9 months a year ?? as far as I can remember this can be done. People do it all the time with vacation homes. Only this is commitment time goes on hold while account is in suspnesion state. So if you had 10 months left when you suspend. You will still have 10 months left when you reactivate after the 9 months

They recently changed their policy and now you can only suspend twice in a 12 month period, and only for up to 6 months.

Still can work.. NFL Season is just about 5 long months right ???
So it would only be one month more until you could suspend for 6 months until the season starts again.

Why does he/do you need a 2 year commit. I thought any "advance receiver" activated brought the 2 year commit.
He should be able to sign up for the one commit w/ an SD receiver and 29.99 package. Right?

Yes. The two year commitment is only attached to the activation of advanced equipment (DVR, HD, HD DVR)
Just to update everyone I did just get a response back, though it is quite unhelpful. Here is what they had to say:
"Thanks for writing us about the NFL SUNDAY TICKET and for expressing your interests for DIRECTV Services.
I understand you have seen that you are able to watch NFL games live via Internet if you subscribed to DIRECTV, NFL SUNDAY TICKET and SUPERFAN, and you want to know if people who are unable to get DIRECTV in their homes because of location issues and building or apartment complex policies does not allow mounting of the dish on the wall, If its possible to allow a separate service that potential customers could sign up for NFL Package broadcasting games via streaming.
Allow me to inform you that, given that your question is a little complicated, and since we're always looking for ways to enhance our services, and customer feedback is very important to us.
I have forwarded your comments on to DIRECTV Management.
Should you have anymore questions, visit directv.com or call us at 1-800-531-5000. Our Customer Service Representatives will be more than happy to help you.
Thanks again for writing and stay tuned to directv.com for the latest news and information about our services."
I am debating on calling in and asking to speak to someone about this. I realize it might not do any good, but I would like to see their anwser.
