View Full Version : Question about connectors used on HR21 install yesterday

I know this may seem a little over the top, but the installer that showed up yesterday from Ironwood to install my HR21 did not have me feeling confident at all. Shocker, I know:lol: First of all, I had run my 2 lengths of cable and disconnected my H20, so it was down to putting 2 connectors on up at the dish, and 2 at the receiver, turn on the unit, make sure it works, give us the quick 'tutorial' that they give, and walk out. Figured that would make whoever it was a little happier. They didn't seem very appreciative.......in fact, it was a 19 year old girl that had been working for Ironwood for 3 months, and first thing she said was "hope you didn't run 59". Anyway after a few minutes, I think she picked up to the fact that I was at least a little savvy about this stuff, and actually was pushing for me to go up on the roof and put the connectors on at the dish while she set up the receiver. Bottom line was you could tell she wasn't crazy about going up and down ladders, and I don't have a high roof, nor steep pitch. Anyway, I told her I'd feel more comfortable if she did it( and I had run the cable......c'mon!). I also didn't want her in my house out of my sight while I'm on the roof. Anyway, after moaning about getting her ladder and getting up there, she stripped the cables, and as she seemed to be having a hard time pushing the connector partially on to the end prior to compressing it, she says "this is quad"(and it's not).....would I mind running down to her van and getting the "purple" connectors. I didn't mind, and I did. Anyway, she asked where I got the cable, and I told her online. I also told her that the last installer had no problem with that same cable. She shrugged. She finally got these purple connectors on, but I can't help wondering if she perhaps used the wrong connector. This is a long post, I know, but these people that they send out sometimes(not always) drive me nuts. Anyway, here is the connectors she used

Any reason why these 2 don't go together? She seemed to make kind of a big deal out of it. Thanks very much in advance for any and all feedback.

There are two different flavors of RG6 as you already know. RG6 snd RG6 Quad.
The link you provided doesn't show any indication that it is Quad. Quad has a second braid shielding whereas regular RG6 does not.
I can't tell by the picture if that is a quad connector or not. It looks like it's got a tight fit around the cable.
Maybe an installer on the board will know by looking at the connector. There certainly is a difference. You "almost" can't get a standard RG6 connector on RG6 Quad. On the flip side, a quad connector on standard RG6 will be loose and spin on the cable.
What's the part# on the conector?

Yeah, I knew it wasn't quad, and you're right, it is a tight fit. It definitely doesn't spin on the cable. The Q in the part # makes me think it's for Quad, but I'm guessing. I know I'm probably being too anal, but sometimes these Ironwood people will do that to you:D

Thanks! I feel like an idiot. After you asked the part # and I posted it, I realized I could have just done a search:blush: I was about to come back and post that same link.I think you are right. That's asking for moisture to get to the cable then, correct?

No worries. :)
Yea...the risk is certainly greater. They're made different for a reason.
If the outside connectors are inside the LNB assembly directly connected to the internal multi-switch then it may not be as much of a concern. It all really depends what you feel comfortable with.
Have fun making that phone call.

Yes those are quad shield connectors. They should work ok on non quad cable. They just have a tiny bit more room for the extra shielding.

They may work....but they aren't designed for standard RG6. The seal is not as good as standard RG6 connectors. You can make cat 3 cable work on an ethernet network...but would you want too. :p

I'm on hold right now with Ironwood:lol:
I should call D and maybe end up with the premiere package for a few months or something
I have to say that i'm not comfortable with it not being done absolutely correct. That kind of stuff bugs me.

And that, my friend, is the reason they will be changed by Ironwood.........for being wrong, and on principle.

Un-fraking believable.

Oh, thanks for sparing me......give me a break man, what's your problem? I haven't hung out here very long, but from what I can see is that it's an awesome site, and everyone seems very friendly and helpful, so why are you ready to jump on me? If the connectors are designed for a different cable than what I have, what is so "Un-fraking" beliveable about the fact that I want the proper connector for my cable? Chill out man, I'm here for the same reason as everyone else. I come in peace.

I shouldn't speak for RobertE, but since he's offline at the moment I'll take this opportunity.....He doesn't need me to speak for him...however
He is an installer and I think human nature kicks in sometimes. He see's alot of "installer bashing" in this forum. Not that you did necessarily......but I would have to assume he thinks you may be nit pickin'.
He's a good installer and takes pride in his work.

Hey, that's good to hear, and I take your word for it that he is good, and I'm not trying to start trouble........this is a great place! I'm in a different line of work, and I also take a lot of pride in my work, and would get upset if I thought someone was bashing everyone in my line of work.........if that is indeed what upset him. I wasn't doing that, just for the record. A lot of the installers don't take pride, and I believe a fair share do. I'm a painting contractor, and I see stuff all the time that other contractors call 'good' that I would never call a finished product. I think pride in one's work isn't a real common thing in general anymore. I stated myself that maybe I was being too anal with my question in my first post, and maybe I am. I still feel that the proper connector should be on the cable. I may just do them my self tomorrow. Anyway, I do understand why he may have been upset, so I apologize if anything I said about the installer(s) was taken personally. That was not my intention. RobertE, if you read this, hopefully no hard feelings.

At my shop we were out of regular RG6 connectors for about a week so we had to use some Qs to get the installs done. The other choice was to reschedule the install. If the Q fitting was used on the inside, don't worry.

Don't feel bad my Ironwood installer had punctured a thumb with the screwgun, I ended up pushing the ends on. Then to top it off he ran out of ends and I had to get mine out of the garage so he could finish the install.
So yes we have some real winners out there.

Well, it was used on the outside......inside the lnb. They are tight, so I guess the risk of getting wet is very minimal, so I don't know, I may change them, I may not. Probably will......for peace of mind.

You may want to re-align the slimline after you futz with the LNB. But from what I've seen the arm on the slimline really protects the connectors. I really wouldn't worry about it.

norcal jim, it may just be that the insulator combined with the cover (both a little thicker than a lot of other cables) makes the quad connector a better fit. Total cable thickness varies between manufacturers.
If you decide to check them, apply about one half the presssure required to unscrew a coke cap. If the connector does not spin, it is good.

That could very well be all it is..............the installer's apparent annoyance at having to get a ladder and do her job(after asking ME to put the connectors on) like she is payed to do, and then calling the cable quad when it isn't, took my level of confidence in her way down, so it makes you wonder about everything she did.

I'll do that.....thanks! Guess I could always put a dab of silicone at the back end of the connector just for piece of mind also.

Being an installer myself, I know where RobertE is coming from. If the connectors are tight, there isn't anything you have to worry about. Making a call to the hsp will most likely result in a re-roll and charge back to that tech (for probably more than she got paid to do the job).
I don't know about you, but it would have me more than a little upset if I lost money and had to roll back on a job to replace connectors that were tight to begin with.

Best band ever? Have you heard of Megadeth or Annihilator? Metallica was a great band at one time but not anymore. The live shows are all they have left. St. Anger sucked so bad that they will never play a song from it live again. Maybe with alot of prayer the next album might be good. With Rick Rubins help it is possible, but he can't work miracles.

Oh yeah, I totally agree.......I'd be upset also. I wasn't feeling real confident about her when she started pushing for me to go on my roof and put the connectors on myself, after I already ran the cable. Then when she started having a hard time getting the first connectors( that she didn't use) to go on, I was a little more concerned, especially when a previous installer had absolutely no problem putting standard connectors on that very same cable. I did what techrep said.....went up today, tried to twist them with a little more pressure than he even suggested, and they wouldn't budge......plus, they are in the lnb, and to top it off, the most likely place for water to get in, if it was going to, is on the end of the connector that is angled down, due to the angle of the lnb. Gravity alone would make it very hard for water to migrate upwards towards the very end of the connector, where it would do it's damage. I'm very anal, but you can probably see how my concern arose.....maybe not. I don't have it in for this installer. I ran the cable so it could go exactly where I wanted, and also figured it would help out the installer.........and I know they get paid by the job, so I'm considerate of that, but I do want it done right. Turns out it apperas to be fine, based on RobertE and a few others here, so I'm good with it. Like I said, I could still put a dab of silicone right at the point of possible entry for water, and that would take away any doubt, but as much of a freak as I am, I probably won't even do that after taking a good look at it.:)

Yeah, maybe so. I joined in '03 and won a meet and greet a month after I joined, so that was way cool. I like em all, but meeting James was cool as hell. He is the heartbeat of that band, not Lars, like a lot of people think. Nothing against Lars.
