Is it a wish list item?
Is it possible?
Is it being considered?

I have PIP on my 37" Vizio. I hooked up my OTA antenna to the TV's RF input. That way I can watch a satellite channel in one screen and an OTA channel on the other. I could hook up a second receiver but I don't use PIP enough to justify the extra $4.99/mo cost.

with two tuners, I would think it is technology possible. The problem would be that D* would miss out on all that 2nd receiver in the house money since you could send tuner 2 feed to a 2nd TV or PiP on your main unit.

Yea, but thats no fun when you're using HDMI cables and your TV has PIP built in.

With all of the current DIRECTV receivers, there is only one video stream output at a time. I think it may be technically possible for HR2x series receivers to display two streams at the same time, but it would take a huge effort in reprogramming.

In short, I wouldn't look for this with current hardware.

Dont the HR receivers all have single mpeg decoding chips, making a PiP situation impossible with the current hardware?

Maybe if D* decides to actually make a DVR with comparable features to the E* ViP series, we'll get this. It's not possible with the current hardware.

I have an HR10 and and HR20 connected to my TV. Each with HDMI. PIP does not work. I have not tried playing with the res settings to see if it would work in SD.

It may depend on the settings of your TV. I think with my TV if one input is HDMI, the PIP input has to be something different. There is a whole chart in my TV's user guide about which combinations of connections you can use for PIP.

IIRC...

The technical specs on the main decoder chip:
1 MPEG-4 stream at once.

Thus there is ZERO chance you will see PiP in any of the current DirecTV receivers.

I just read in my TV manual that only one HDMI input source can be displayed at a time. It also states that digital signal inputs can only be displayed as the main picture. Looks to me like PIP will work only if the PIP/POP signal is from ANT or other non-digital-non-HDMI source. Even if I connect one of the Sat recvrs with component, it will not show up in PIP.

Correct (http://www.dbstalk.com/showpost.php?p=1054151&postcount=6) on the Broadcom 7411

The video decoder can operate as a single-channel HD decoder or a dual-channel SD decoder, and supports H.264, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video decoding, making it an ideal solution for both broadcast and packaged media video applications.

I was looking at a neat 42" Toshiba LCD TV on Costco.com. The specs did not mention POP or PIP. I emailed them to ask if this model had POP or PIP. This is the answer I got.

Dear Sir/Madam:
Thanks for writing

Unfortunately the 42HL167 does not have POP or PIP. Many newer televisions are being manufactured without this feature because of the increased use of cable and satellite boxes instead of direct antenna or straight cable from a wall outlet. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

This TV has 3 HDMI inputs and every whistle and bell you can imagine, except POP or PIP.
