View Full Version : R15-500 emitting powerful RF

Here's a new one. My newly installed refurbished R15-500 is emitting a strong radio signal, knocking out am radio in my house (and a good 50 foot radius around the house). It peaks at around 880 kHz.
In the setup menu, the remote is set to IR.
The only way to stop the transmission is to unplug both satellite cables coming into the receiver from the dish.
When the Mets don't play, I could care less about listening to AM radio, but I am concerned about strong and possibly harmful radio emissions in my house.
Any suggestions?

I have an -500 not 20 feet from my clock radio which I have on an AM station for the morning news. Never experienced the interference. Possibly a grounding issue, just guessing. Hopefully someone else here can offer some help. Keep us posted as this is a new one for me.
If you unplug the R15 does the problem stop? The LNB's could be the fault but the R15 gives them the power they need.
Have you taken a portable AM radio and moved it around the R15, cables, multi-switch and dish/LNB. If you get one spot significantly louder than the rest, good chance thats where the problem is. It could be a bad crimp on an F connector.
Also try just disconnecting the cables at the dish but leaving them hooked to the R15. If you don't get noise, then I would say the problem is at the LNB.
Oh, LET"S GO METS!

Thanks for the advice. The emission stops when I unplug the receiver or disconnect both satellite cables. If I leave one cable connected (either one) the emission continues.
The signal does not get stronger around certain parts of the receiver. It's very strong throughout the two story house. In fact, it even knocks out the car AM radio as I'm pulling out of the driveway! My driveway is on the other side of the house through three walls to the receiver. The LNB is in the back yard, also far from the driveway. By the time I pull into the street, the interference fades. I've since unplugged the receiver and only plug it in when someone watches TV.

unplugging the receiver would seem to rob you of the benefit of having a DVR.
RF interference is troubling (and also a violation of FCC law). Since the unit is newly installed, you should have DTV come back out for free to fix the problem (which from your description sounds like the LNBs).
