I upgraded my DP with a 7200rpm 30gb Maxtor HD from Staples (cost after rebate $20). The unit was getting pretty hot when it was on top of my TV. So I moved it to the side of the TV and placed it vertically. It now runs much cooler! Anyone have an opinion as to whether there are long term concerns with running the DP vertically?

No concerns if it gets adequate ventilation. Oh, and as long as your programming doesn't display sideways. :D

I have run into this in the past. The answer is it varies.

Check your particular hard drive model out at the manufacturer's website. Look in the mounting instructions or specs. All hard drives are allowed to have the sides vertical (screw side up and down) but most are NOT allowed to be mounted end down (power connector up or down) as it would be in the dishplayer standing vertically.
I would check your model to be sure.
