Has anyone heard anything definite about BBC World being offered in the US this year (2003)? I've heard rumors of it but nothing concrete.
BBC America is a poor substitute -- for viewers on the west coast the only times to see BBC news is 3,4,5AM and 3PM. BBC News is arguably the best thing the BBC offers and it's a shame that BBC America is programmed/packaged so badly that they relegate it to times when no one is watching. Add to this the constant repetition of the same shows and the channel becomes almost unwatchable.
I believe that Discovery networks actually controls and sells the advertising time in the US, which may explain why we're getting an inferior product while the rest of the world gets the real thing.
For those that haven't seen BBC World while traveling overseas, they generally provide a 30 minute news cast for the first half of every hour, followed by a documentary or talk/discussion show in the balance of the hour. There's also other light entertainment shows. A much, much better product.

The "News Junkies" out there has been requesting it for years. If anything to get a non-american point of view of the world. I don't think they will be adding it soon to either system. They probably consider it just another news channel and figure we have plenty of those :(

While US providers and the Beeb continue to waffle,
BBC World is available from the Canadian services.
You can only subscribe using a Canadian address,
but the signals generally cover North America.
I watch BBC World on the computer, I also watch BBC Scotland news the same way! BBC America is a joke, the shows are OLD, and its the same old stuff over and over! I look foward to regular BBC programing to get here if it ever does! I think it may appear on Globecast World TV before anyplace else! The BBC has all sorts of quality stuff at this web site...

I really liked BBC world when in Europe, but I never watch BBC America. I would love to see BBC World here, I would probably watch it to see what the EU view is on things. It is quite interesting to see the difference how the same new is reported.

BBC World is definitely a great service to have, just to hear a different viewpoint. We've had it on cable and satellite here in Canada for about 3 years now. I don't understand why it doesn't get U.S. coverage at all. Is it a Rights thing or something like that??

That (discovery networks owning the rights) is probably the main reason we may never get to see the real thing. They are the ones that insert commercials for things like the garden weasel and the clapper, and custom pick the shows for Americans.
In Canada, do you see BBC World with or without commercials? I know that there's a break to place them -- the red screen that displays what's up next with the theme music in the background, but whenever I've seen it on cable in hotels overseas (Mexico, Brazil, Spain) they've run it commercial free.
US cable/satellite companies are probably not going to pick something up if they are responsible for selling all the advertising time. With other US news channels its a combination of network and local advertisements.

There are no Commercials on BBC World in Canada.
I like the idea of the first four words you just said.
Keep in mind PBS and NCE stations across the country air BBC World News. I currently dont get BBC America (Comcast requires digital cable for this channel), but I get WNJS and WYBE that show BBC World News.

.....As Bush gets ready to pull the trigger I am watching BBC World & CBC Newsworld more than CNN & MSNBC.....
.....IMO.....Too much coverage about Elizabeth Smart on CNN & MSNBC (I'm happy she's home...give it a rest)+....too many talking head retired US generals....blah blah
BBC World & CBC Newsworld seem to be putting things in better perspective....(BBC World especially is all over the Iraq situation)....

What I really want is the Fox News Channel. I need to hear opinions from the Right.

I turned on the TV this morning at 5:30 to catch some news and BBC World was on our local PBS channel.
Another good alternative news channel is Link.

I would like Dish to make a UK International Package with ITV, BBC, and other networks. Last summer, i started to get interested in British TV. I sent an email during the charlie chat, but i got a reply after the show, stating that it was forwarded to the programming department.

After seeing a day of BBC World, makes me wish they would bring it to the US. Part of the US can see on C-Band it is not encrypted. Of course a lot of the US news stations would probably scream that it is unfair because it does not have commercials.
I really liked yesterday the bombing summaries they showed set to music.
