Shalom, y'all,
What's the best deal for an existing subscriber
to replace a single legacy receiver with a PVR
such as the 508?
I'm willing to wait for any upcoming 522 or 544,
especially since money is tight right now
(maxxing out the credit card).
We'd also be interested in the 921 for HD
future compatibility, if it could only be a
reasonably affordable option.
TIA for any ideas!

Dish Depot is offering a trade in deal for legacy receivers to upgrade to a 508. Not a huge deal, but better than nothing.

If you want to sell your old reciever yourself, then the Existing customer 508 purchase ($199, with 1 year commit to at150 and CC AutoPay) is probably best deal if already have the requirements. And they if you sell your reciever you end up with a nice savings.
If you don't want to commit or sell the reciever yourself, you can get the 508 at DishDepot.com for $299, with a tradein of between $20-$40 for your old reciever.

That's about what I figured.
Last time I checked, I think
the 508 was $270 at Costco.
I'll try to pay down the CC,
and wait for a better deal.

Sell you existing unit on Ebay and then buy the 508 at Costco for $270. THe 921 will be too expensive for the next couple of years, probably in the 700-900 range, guesstimated. Will make the 721 look cheap.

I agree, the 921 will be too expensive, way way too expensive, it could be as much as a grand for that unit. Prices will drop and equipment will revolutionize and get smaller when HD gets more popular. PVR is pretty safe to buy at this point because it has been out there for a while.

Are there any plans for any other new E* HD receivers besides the 921? I want to get a HD receiver, but the 6000 has an ancient menu guide and the 921 is just too much $$$ for my needs.
I'd like a new HD receiver like the 6000 w/ integrated OTA tuner and that adapter for DiscoveryHD, or even a single tuner HD PVR.

I also think they should come out with an up to date HD receiver that is not a PVR product to match its 301 product line. Maybe when they get te 921 HD product out that they will come out with a cheaper nonPVR HD product. One should call or write and ask about that one. That is a good question.

One thing about Dish is that they are not into "All Options". They save money in production by there being less models. Like we had said, there should have been a 301, 401 (like the old 4900), 50x and 6000 (for HD). But they never gave an option for a 401. If there was true competition like on D* recievers, then you would see what you talk about. If enough people want it, give it to them. But Dish pretty much has said these are the models we offer, if you want a cross between a 301 and a 501, get the 501. If you want a cross between the Model 6000 and the 921, get the 921. :(

They should at least make a current model upgradable with hardware instead of limiting them. It would be nice to make a 301 into an HD with a plug on adapter, or does the tuner have to have some kind of capability for that?

Building Expandability into a unit usually makes it more expensive to produce (have to had expansion ports, etc) So Dish would be the last to do that. :D
