Hi, I just hook up the external 750G HD to my HR20. Everything works. However, I find the light on the external harddisk a little annoying (as it is in my bedroom). So I am wondering if the internal hardisk actually can be replaced with a larger capacity one. If that is doable, please let me know....

thanks in advance.

Yes, it's possible.
It would be a violation of the lease agreement and probably void your warranty.
Depending on which model of HR20 you have it may not be real easy to physically remove the existing drive because of the way they're mounted.

Mine is HR20-100S. Do you think it is hard to remove the internal HD?

Speaking of 'agreement', I have little respect to DirecTV in that regard. We pay for the box in the name of "leasing". On the other hand, when they introduce the new HD channels, we are forced to pay again in order to pick up the new channel. In my eyes, it is a payment without any warranty.

Think what you want, but we'll all keep a place warm for your "D* charged me $749 when I tried to return a box I cracked open when it was under warranty even though I was well within the warranty period if there was an issue and if I wanted extra storage I should've gotten an eSata drive, but D* sucks!" thread.

It's not hard, just not like in a computer where you open the case and unscrew four screws and pull it out. I'm sure someone here has posted instructions on opening that case.

Hey, as for your agreement with DirecTV do what you want...just passed along some info.

Depending on what external hard drive ou have you can dim the lights r turn them off. The Seagate Free Agent allows for this. There are multiple posts in the forum on how to turn this off.

A piece of electrical tape cut to fit over the light is generally a good way to circumvent voiding the warranty on the OP's IRD as well.

that's a good good way to do it!

if i were to open up the case, i would put in a 1TB hard disk.... but it seems there are few disks in that group would be as quiet as the one from Seagate, what's it, free agent. yes, let me tape it to shield the light. thanks.

To be clear,

opening up your case is a violation of your lease agreement. We cannot, do not, and will not support that.
