View Full Version : SWM supported with HR20?

I'm moving from a HR10-250, and I only have 2 runs to my location from the multi-switch.
I have an OTA antenna, and I was able to get my installer to find me a HR20-100 so I could keep my locals.
However, when they were here they said I couldn't keep using my diplexer to get the OTA antenna upstairs. The tech suggested calling and asking for an installer to come out and install a SWM so that I could free up one cable for the OTA antenna.
I'm on the phone w/ DTV now and they're claiming that the SWM is only compatible with the HR21, not the HR20. Is this really true? I found one of Earl's posts in the SWM First Look thread that seems to imply that the HR20 was the first DVR supported....

The HR20 has always been SWM compatible. In fact, there are many using their HR20's with an SWM as I type this. The H20 was recently SWM enabled also.

1 - the HR20 - both -100 and -700 are SWM compatible.
2 - Diplexing OTA is still possible - just more difficult than it used to be. The BBC (that's normally right at the receiver) needs to be in line immediately after the WB68 multiswitch - then the diplexer. If the diplexer is before the BBC, it won't work. The OTA frequencies, as I understand it, conflict with the KA lo frequencies used by the new MPEG4 HD signals. A search on diplex would probably turn up lots of threads on this. Of course, the BBC needs to be indoors - so if your multswitch and diplexer are outside it might not be possible....

Wow. The person on the phone is claiming I have to contact a local installer to get a SWM. That sounds wrong....

Everything's set up to be inside.
I don't have a multi-switch at this point since the switch the installer brought was dead. He said since I only had 2 receivers I didn't need a multiswitch.
So it sounds like I can just move the BBCs downstairs to where I'd be diplexing in the OTA signal and things should just work?

That's true. And very few installers have SWMs yet. Hopefully they'll be more widely available early next year.

Well... no, they were not wrong.
The SWM is not publicly available yet in all markets..
Many DBSTalk users have been part of the field trials of the SWM

Thanks...
I got bounced back to Direc-tec (the installer) and they conferenced me with DTV. They created a new work order saying I needed the SWM and scheduled an appointment for Saturday. Hopefully it all works out then. If it doesn't, I'll just punt and move the BBCs down to the basement and try the diplexor there...

After the SWm you will not need BBC's.
