View Full Version : To set some expectations for the RSN launch today
Satelliteracer

I've seen several posts already regarding what to expect. The 13 RSNs launched today will provide HD for GAMES ONLY as of right now on their dash-1 counterpart (i.e. 635-1 for example). The main content is still in SD until these RSNs come around to doing full time 24/7 HD, which is probably a way off.
Hope that helps.
A few more HD launches in 2007 to come still so enjoy.

But will that translate to more HD games for the sports packages (LP, EI, etc)?

OT: How about our expectations to see the Viacom HD channels without sidebars?
Any idea when they'll go to full screen?
By the way, thanks for all your insight into these new launches.

Just curious, why would you want the non-hd content stretched?
Look at TBS, it is terrible.
Providing content in OAR seems to me to be the right thing to do.

Don't some people avoid the bars and stretch so as not to have burn in for their HD television sets? At least some of the older models? That's what I've heard for some people, but it's probably a personal choice.

That doesn't mean you are required to have a sports package of some kind, does it? I don't have a sports package but I assume "GAMES ONLY" means any game that is carried by my RSN (in my case FSNW) and happens to be produced in HD will be shown on the corrosponding HD channel (651-1 in this case) as well as the SD channel (651). Is this correct?

You'll get your in market games that you now get in SD in HD.
You can't convince the no-stretch zealots that there can be more than one point of view on the issue.

if that is your regional sports channel then you
should be ok....like fssw is here
Is it likely that we'll see MSGHD and FSNYHD before the end of 2007?

What about games that the RSN is only doing in SD - will these channels at least show the SD game upconverted? That would improve the PQ greatly IMO.

I'm not talking about stretching non-hd content. I hate that also.
I'm referring to the fact that they (The new HD Nationals today) are transmitting their HD signals with sidebars.
There has been at least a dozen videos that I've seen on these new channels this morning, that have had the sidebars on them when I have seen the same videos on MHD in full screen hd.

That is VIACOM's hands... they are the ones that are broadcasting a MATTED 4:3 in a 16:9 frame.
Once they have actual 16:9 content (be it HD or SD) you will see the SideBars go away.
One avenue woudl be to write to VIACOM and ask them to at least go the ESPN route, and add something other then black bars to the side... but even then, it would be static.
If you must avoid the bars, you are going to have to watch the SD version of the channel.
does anyone have any input as to why so many of us are seeing 771 errors on the new RSNs with our HR20s (I think the majority of the people having issues are on 0x1C3)?

Other then because they are game-time only RSN's... there might not be anything in the stream for them at this early hour of the day.
And the HR20 is not processing the "error/event" properly.
The H21's this morning, were just showing a blank screen (not an errror message).
Until there is actual content on there, it is hard to tell if it is just a bad error message, or if you have an actual satellite reception issue.

Are those stations available anywhere in HD? Just wondering as they carry Big East games, on occasion, and would like them in HD like you would although I am in the Sunny South (but get them due to the sportspack.)
Just looked at E*'s website and they don't show those as being in HD, so guess we have to wait for the providers to upgrade on these two?

i know it's not a reception issue... my H20 picks up those channels with no complications. I've swapped BBCs from the H20 to the HR20 as well as RG6 connections from the H20 to HR20 and still get the same result. I'm seeing the same thing on both of my HR20. I've seen at least a dozen posts since these channels went live with other people having the same issue. waiting until live content is available isn't really an option for me.... b/c any live content on that feed is going to be blacked out (since i'm not in any of those markets) for me. guess i'll just see what others report.
hey.. i've got a good idea, how about D* throws up MSG-HD and FSNNY-HD and i'll test those?
Satelliteracer
11-14-07, 08:49 AM
In addition, D* launched some alternate feeds in HD today as well
639-1 FSN-HOU-HD
642-1 FSN-WI
646-1 FSN-UT
648-1 FSN-MW-HD
669-1 RSNaHD
These are only occasional channels when overflow, etc are needed but just a fyi for you.

On my HR-20, some of the new channels are showing the error code and some are just blank screens. Guess when there is content, should be interesting. :D
Any idea why I am getting 2 (two) 639-1 channels showing up in the channel guide?

Are you sure it's actually HD? I flipped on MTV HD this morning and it didn't look HD to me. Just because MHD shows the videos in HD it doesn't mean that MTV HD will--they are two different channels.
ive seen the FSHHD 639-1 for weeks, and now they added FSHOUH 639-1 maybe theyll just drop the old version edit..ooh its an alternate feed

The BBC test channels 480 and 481 are fine. No other authorized channel on 103(b) is giving me that message.

are both of your HR20s running the same software? are they both the same model (ie both HR20-100s or HR20-700s)?

Could someone please explain the RSN to me. I dont understand them. I know they are sports channels. I dont think I can get them all. Or can I? If I cant get them all then why are they listed as national channels? Just dont understand the whole thing. How can I tell which ones I get? If I cant get them all. Iam in central Pa. Never mind I found a thread on this.

RSN : Regional Sports Network
You an get them all if you subscribe to the Premier Tier, or add-on the Sports Package. So they are available nationally, if you want to pay for them.
As for which ones you get included in your base package... depends on your exact DMA... . there is a good chance that in PA you don't get one, since COMCAST Philly is not available on DirecTV

Why would you ruin your RPTV? I have a Sony RPTV that is 6 years old and watching SD in the 4x3 mode and it works fine. Black bars go away when there is HD programing
Some RPTVs are notorious for having issues with the edges of the screen progressively having a darker color than the rest of the screen as a result of watching too much programming with black pillar bars.

My problem is that my TV tends to show 4:3 content with slightly concave sides. Drives me nuts, so I much prefer stretch-o-vision.

Actually, I am just west of Philly, but due to the CSN Philly loophole w/ satellite, here we get MASN and CSN DC as our two RSNs. CSN DC is available in HD, and MASN is planning on going HD next year.
CSN Philly would be my real RSN, if I had cable. The people up in the NE corner of PA get CSN Philly and YES, SNY, FSN NY, and MSG as their RSNs on cable, but via D* just YES, MSG, FSN NY, and SNY as their RSNs. From what I remember, however, they get a limited number of games each year.. something like up to 50 Ranger games on MSG, instead of the full slate for some reason.
Over on the west side of PA (b/w Erie, State College, and Washington), they get FSN Pittsburgh as their RSN.
I used to live in Erie and that is a weird market (especially for football!)..being almost exactly b/w Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Buffalo. Erie is designated by the NFL as a Buffalo market, although the fan base there is approx. 40% Steelers, 40% Browns, and 20% Bills. On cable, most of them get FSN Pittsburgh, STO, FSN Ohio, and MSG (Buffalo), although on D*, they only get FSN Pittsburgh and MSG (Buffalo), but not FSN Ohio or STO.

It's even worse over here in Allentown. We get no RSN's at all, SD or HD. I personally think we should be able to get the NY RSN'S. After all I'm only 30 minutes from the Jersey state line. Kinda like a DNS RSN!

I thought you guys did get YES and SNY. I've been up to the Poconos and East Stroudsburg several times and in each hotel, I got MSG, YES, and SNY as well as CSN Philly. Obviously, this was cable.
If Allentown is not in any team's claimed territory, D* should let you pick if you want to get MSG, FSN NY, SNY, and YES. If no team claims that territory, no team is being hurt by people living there getting NY RSNs. Stupid rules.

We are in Flyers, Phillies and Sixers country up here. In other words CSN Philly territory. According to D* my local NHL team is the Penguins but only if I subscribe to the sports pak. Also I can see the NY Red Bulls if I have sports pak. Yipee! :nono2: Without sports pak I'm not eligible to see any RSN's. Which stinks since I spend a fortune each year for the Yankees, Mets , Islanders and Rangers. All would be rectified if I could get the NY RSN's.

I have read through this thread and apologize if was answered and maybe I just didn't see it or maybe I didn't get it.
I subscribe to the Sports package, HD packages, and the College Basketball package but I am getting confused on something.
Say, I didn't have the College Basketball package but just the HD/Sports packages. Would I still be getting the HD RSN's of the games? Or even the SD of the games? Or does the college basketball package NOT ONLY give me 692-699 of games but it also flips the switch on the HD parts of the games.

Almost all geometry problems can be fixed by a professional calibrator. The settings are in the sub-menus.
Trying to convince someone not to use the OAR is just like trying to convince someone not to buy pan and scan DVD's. Occasionally, it's impossible.
