That's like asking what size entertainment center should I get for my TV. Well, ok not quite. I'll just say the shortest size poll possible in order to maintain a constant signal with no obstructions like trees. If the bucket is not dug in a hole, then it can get blown over with a stiff wind if the poll is too tall and there's no support. Don't worry about people walking in front of it. That isn't really a problem. Worry about trees. I would also recommend a plastic pole, if you aren't digging this out.. Plastic poles can absorb some of the force from the wind and won't go offline as much as you think. The best solution of course is to dig a hole and bury the bucket. They really shouldn't mind that because once you move out, all you have to do is remove the bucket and there's no trace.

I was more so talking about diameter than anything, but thank you for your advice :) Im going to secure the bucket for sure :) I already planned on that.

1 5/8" outside diameter. Standard steel pipe with a 1 1/4" internal diameter is this size. Certain chain-link fence elements are, too. Either is available for not much money at places like Home Depot and Lowes.

Well, I have placed a few buckes above ground where there was a concrete patio and digging was impossible. I used the shortest plastic pipe possible where the bottom of the only cleared the bucked by about 2 inches, and the back of the bucket resed against the ledge of the sliding door window. The bucket is filled with about 75 pounds of sand and concrete with the pole sticking only about 1 foot above the surface. I think that's pretty safe.

One and eleven sixteenths of an inch
(1 11/16")
Nice tight fit, check out www.basicinstall.com they have stuff there about bucket installs, good luck with your project. Shame you cant get your two dish installed, remember you can paint your dish and this might help them look better, but you cant paint the lnb : (
