Over the years I have found the different volume levels between channels, especially between HD channels and SD channels annoying. I seems that the DVR's could utilize an output voume equalizer if they wanted too. Is there any hope that future equipment will address this issue?:(

Sure hope NOT... would kill all the dynamics of our wonderful DD... hopefully the stations will find a more even level setting...

Generally speaking, the biggest contributor to the difference in audio levels between HD and SD channels is the fact that the SD channels are PCM (a digital representation of analog) and the HD channels are Dolby Digital, for the most part.
The digital audio has a much greater dynamic range (the quiet stuff is quieter, and the loud stuff is really loud. This results in a lower average volume level on the DD channels. There are receivers that have "auto leveling" features, but this can have a detrimental effect on audio quality.
I certainly wouldn't be against such a feature, as long as it was an option. As far as I am concerned, I want my audio (and video, for that matter) to get to me as unmolested as possible.

I'm not sure DirecTV could actually do this with DD 5.1 I assume it would mean decoding the digital bistream, modifying it and then restoring it to the path to the A/V receiver. It works on the A/V receivers because they decode the DD 5.1 audio to analog and then apply the levelling to the analog signal.

I agree that the A/V receiver (or the HDTV) is the appropriate place for such a feature.
