View Full Version : Dish Model 3000 Receiver Blackout/Lockup Problem

I have an older model 3000 receiver that recently has developed a problem. I am attempting to decide if it is the receiver or a Dish Network compression (or other) related issue. It is a very early HTS model (not JVC manufactured).

The problem is that periodically, the screen will go gray, sound will cease, and the remote control is locked out from doing any commands (channel up/down fails, etc). This wil happen for a period of anywhere from ten seconds to 15 seconds, then the picture and sound reappear and everything is fine again. This cycle may continue again in half an hour, or sometimes not for hours at a time, seemingly depending on the channel watched.

I have read that the model 3000 receivers do not have much buffer memory installed, so the gray screen may be the receiver waiting on the MPEG update blocks--in short, it runs out of picture info until the buffer fills again. BTW, transponder signal levels look fine on the receiver when everything is "normal"--in the upper 80's usually, so I don't suspect LNB/RG-6 problems, even though intermittent issues can't be eliminated as problem candidates I suppose.

My questions:
1) If my hypothesis is correct about as a possible cause, are there any options other than to upgrade to a newer receiver, and,
2) Shouldn't Dish pay for my upgrade if "1" is true? and,
3) Do any other model 3000 receiver owners (HTS or JVC) experience this problem?

Any guidance or suggestions are appreciated. TIA.

The first suggestion I would make is call DISH an sign up for the $1.99/Mo. extended warranty. You must be covered for a month before you file a claim. I suspect you are going to need to replace that 5 year old receiver.
