We need those channels NOW!!
Do you think we will ever get FSNY HD & MSG HD??? Or will it be when the Dolan family are long gone and buried...
My beef with Directv is they are advertising that they have MSG Network on their website. It's a lie.

The MSG HD and FSNY HD are not on the web site ad anymore so their is no lie involved. I am sure that D* didnt create some conspiracy.
If you REALLY want these two channels, and I am sure that you do, why dont you go after the real cause of the problem: Dolan and Cablevision.
It would take you about 2 minutes on Google to discover that Dolan is hacked off about the NFL package on D*. He is the blockade, not D*. Send him a simple email and ask him what the hold up is.
Anyone think D* wouldn't jump all over these channels if they could?

It's looking like they'll get these about the same time as they get CSN-Philly
I am hoping MSG HD is a Christmas present from D*.
Maybe if Isiah gets sued a few more times the Dolans will need the money. Until then don't bet on it.

I stand corrected it is on the scrolling channel bar... along with a bunch of other channels that havent come on line yet. The HD programming tab, which is where I looked that clearly lays out what D* is doing right now and in the immediate future does not contain the channel MSGHD. However you are correct that it is on the bar.. so I would suspect the D* plans to add it before the end of the year.
You all have to remember who the Dolans are.
They are the MSG owners and have exclusive broadcasts of MSG HD on cablevision. They are greedy and could care less about DTV customers. They won't even let Center Ice broadcast the Rangers in HD. Don't forget that those of us that love hockey love a sport that is the stepchild of major league sports in America. The Dolans could swing a deal with DTV tomorrow if they had any integrity and further the cause of the NHL. Hockey in HD are meant for each other but the Dolans don't care. Hell. here I am in Southeastern Conn. and my supposed home basketbal team is the New Jersey Nets. I still can't figure that one out and I've called DTV 10 times about that issue. Of course I get a different story every time I call. The Celtics are an hour down the road. The Knicks are two hours away and the Nets are almost 3 hours away but they are the team I get.
We all are held hostage by these greedy corporations. I don't even watch the NBA anymore. My point is that while I would love to have MSG HD for the Rangers broadcasts I just don't see it happening very soon. I hope I'm wrong.
I'm sure most of you know that the Dolans own Cablevision. So why would they compete with themselves by allowing DTV to broadcast MSG in HD. They don't care about the fans and never will.

They have (and have had for some time) agreements with both TimeWarner Cable and Comcast for MSG-HD - so it is not exclusive to Cablevision.

If they have an agreement with the other New York cable companies then why did I see MSG in SD on a tv in a sports bar a block away from MSG before going to a Rangers game. An agreement with DTV to Broadcast MSG in HD will open up the HD broadcast to a much wider audience. People will be switching to satellite and dropping the cable companies. Like I keep saying I hope I am wrong because HD brings out the best in hockey and the old complaint that you can't follow the puck will be a moot point. I also think that hockey has the most colorful and beautiful uniforms in major league sports. Again. I just don't think the Dolans care unles it means a huge pile of money for them.

i don't see how that relates to any of this discussion.. MSG HD is most CERTAINLY available to NYC area cable companies. as for why this "bar" didn't 'have it... how do you know what provider they even have? did you ask them if they had cable or satellite? heck, the person running the remotes for the TVs might not even realize there is a different channel for HD.
If you owned a bar in New York and had MSD HD wouldn't you make sure it was on to bring in customers. Again the point really is the Dolans and how they operate. They are not fan friendly and never will be.

i've been to quite a few bars that have really nice plasma tvs all over the place and they don't tune to the HD versions of games that I know are available to them in HD.
i would agree though... the dolans are bad for tv viewers. they are just concerned with making a buck.

I have already emailed the NHL over this. My argument is that the Dolans are keeping OTHER TEAMS off D* in HD. They own the Rangers, and they can do whatever they want with them (like the Flyers), but they DO NOT own the Isles or Devils. I have looked into this, and as best I can find, this is the only case where the owner of one team is able to keep rival teams off the air because he owns their broadcasts as well.
I think even Ranger fans need to stress this point with the league.

I'd like to see Rupert pull his HD content (Fox Business, FX, etc...) from Cablevision until Dolan gives up MSG/FSNY in HD.
Ironic that Rupert owns most of the FSN's but Dolan owns FSNY.
Another annoying thing - Those IO commercials touting Cablevision as the only place to see all 9 NY area teams in HD. I understand that they have the Knicks, Rangers, Isles and Devils. But to boast about having the Giants, Jets, Mets & Yankees? Come on!

The Dolans pull this stunt anytime they have a property they want to "protect" They did it way back before they even OWNED MSG, when they wanted to move it off basic tier to protect Sportschannel which they owned. Then when they bought MSG, they fought with TW to keep MSG OFF Sports Tier. Then they fought with YES about where to put THAT channel on CV systems to protect MSG and FSNY from YES (and I believe they did the same with SNY).
It's one of the reasons I believe that a PROVIDER should never own content. It's a conflict of interest.

Rupert couldn't give a rat's slim backside - he's agreed to give up control of D* (in which News Corp owns about a 38% controlling interest) to Liberty Media, in exchange for the shares of News Corp that Liberty owns. This deal was expected to be done by now, but if I recall correctly they're saying either by the end of the year of shortly into 2008. He has no interest in hurting his "Fox" franchise in any way, shape or form.

Bill Daily, league VP. He's the guy who deals with this kind of stuff anyway. He used to be league counsel. He's a pretty decent guy.
Here is the email I just sent Mr. Daily and Mr. Bettman:
----------------------------------------------
Hello Mr. Daily and Mr. Bettman:
I have been a loyal fan of the NHL and the New York Rangers since the early 1980s. I remember when fans could watch Rangers games on USA Network back in the early 1980s, since Paramount owned the Rangers and USA Network at that time.
I live in south central Pennsylvania area, well outside the New York metro area, so I subscribe to the NHL Center Ice package via DirecTV, and have done so since the late 1990s. I was a fan during the lean years for the Rangers and the Stanley Cup championship year of 1994 as well as through the lockout that crippled the sport.
Recently, with the advent of High Definition TV (HDTV), hockey has found a great new medium for long time fans to continue to enjoy the game even more. HDTV also has the capability of helping attract new fans to hockey since the game really comes alive when you see it in HD. The reason I am writing deals with high definition hockey games available to the fans.
My concern is that a few teams' owners prevent their fans from watching their teams' games in HD. I am specifically referring to the Dolan family which owns Cablevision as well as the New York Rangers and Madison Square Garden (MSG) Network. The Dolan family, in an attempt to limit fans from switching from their cable TV service to satellite TV (namely DirecTV and Dish Network), prevent satellite carriers from carrying MSG HD and FSN NY HD. These two Regional Sports Networks (RSNs) from the New York City area, carry the games of the New York Rangers, New York Islanders, and the New Jersey Devils locally as well as nationally via the NHL Center Ice package. The Dolan family does not own the Islanders or Devils, but through Cablevision, owns the TV rights (through MSG and FSN NY) of these two teams from the respective team owners.
As you know, the NHL Center Ice package is available on many cable systems (via inDemand) as well as both DirecTV and Dish Network and is targeted to 'out of market' fans to watch their favorite NHL teams. Since I am not in the NY area, the only way for me to see Rangers games is via NHL Center Ice. Since the Dolan family prevents MSG HD and FSN NY HD carriage on satellite TV, satellite customers (DirecTV and Dish Network) in the NY area can not get HD hockey games of these 3 local teams, and fans across the USA and Canada can not see the HD hockey games of the Rangers, Islanders, or Devils via the NHL Center Ice package.
Currently, only the standard definition games from MSG and FSN NY are available on DirecTV and Dish Network. Once you've watched a hockey game in HD, you realize how much of the game you are missing in a standard definition NHL broadcast.
Since the Dolan family is playing hardball with DirecTV and Dish Network, the Dolan family essentially is holding the fans of the Rangers, Islanders, and Devils hostage by preventing carriage of MSG HD and FSN NY HD. While, I understand that it is not the NHL's place to tell business owners how to run their business, I do strongly believe it is in the NHL's best interests to investigate and discuss the issue with the Dolan family and Cablevision in order to help assist the owners to come to a carriage agreement with the broadcast carriers (namely DirecTV and Dish Network and the inDemand cable system) so the Rangers, Islanders, and Devils game are available in HD. There are no FCC or other governmental rules coming into play here, but rather the Dolan/Cablevision decision to simply not allow carriage of these two networks.
The Cablevision/Dolan issue is not the only one in the NHL. As you probably know, Comcast Phily prevents carriage of the Flyers games on satellite (DirecTV and Dish Network) due to an FCC loophole in a law in the 1990s which, since Comcast provides the CSN Philly sports channel using only cable or fiber optic lines to distribute the CSN Phily feed to the local cable companies, legally allows prevention of carriage of that channel. With the Flyers, Rangers, Islanders, and Devils HD games being prevented from carriage on NHL Center Ice, that amounts to 80% of the NHL's Atlantic Division not able to be viewed in HD by fans in NY and across the USA and Canada. The only chance nationwide fans of the Rangers, Islanders, or Devils have of seeing HD games of their team is either if Versus or NHL Network (neither are part of NHL Center Ice) carries an HD game or if the game is a Sunday afternoon NBC game later in the season.
The NHL hockey game is the product of the league, not the broadcaster. By allowing the team owners to limit availability of the HD NHL games to NHL fans via NHL Center Ice, I feel it can only hurt the sport of hockey and limit new fans who may otherwise be attracted to the sport by seeing it in HD. Again, I would ask the NHL to further investigate this issue so that fans of the Rangers, Islanders, and Devils can enjoy their teams in high definition.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
--------------------------------------
I would encourage other fans of the Rangers, Islanders, or Devils (or hockey in general) to also write to Mr. Daily and Mr. Bettman. We need to explain that the NHL needs more control over their televised games and how encouraging HD games can help the sport grow by attracting new fans.
Islesfan: My email to bdaily@nhl.com bounced as 'no user by that name'.. do you have another email for Mr. Daily?
n3ntj --- Excellent letter. I will try emailing too. I've tried messaging the NHL via their website, but I've havn't received a response. I've also been emailing the Islanders (since I'm a fan of theirs) and I finally got responses from their Customer Service group that basically said that Cablevision owns all rights until 2014 or something like that (the Islanders gave Cablevision a 30 year deal back in the 80's!) and that the Isles have no say in what Cablevision does. They did say they would try to do something about it when they have leverage when the contract is up. I can't believe that we would have to wait years for a resolution to this so we all have to keep the pressure on the teams and the NHL to resolve this situation.
We need to send a fan petition to the NHL head office. I'm sure there are thousands of us that feel the same way. I would like to help with this. Does anybody have a suggestion how we could set up a petition web site?

skohly, I think we gotta try both sides. A bunch of us have been regularly corresponding with D* for over a month on this matter and all we get is that 'negotiations are in the works'. Since NHL games are the property of the NHL, I think we need to let the league know how we feel about the issue. HD is a perfect medium for attracting hockey fans and that is exactly what the NHL wants. Especially due to the lockout a few years ago.
I'd encourage all of you that want more HD hockey, especially fans of the Rangers, Islanders, and Devils to contact Gary Bettman and Bill Daly and let them know how you feel. This 'grass roots' effort with D* helped us get dual NHL CI feeds of many games.
From recent postings by Satelliteracer, a carriage agreement may have been reached, but you never know.

as good as the YES HD feed. Clearly not HD lite. The Yankee games are far superior to the MSG HD feed that was broadcast yesterday. The MSG HD feed

It is marginally better than a 4x3 SD feed, but it is not worth an extra per sub
fee to Cablevision for HD. If all the feeds are that bad, I would end up watching
HD games of other teams.

That is an issue with the local station, WCTX. Hopefully they will have the equipment next year to show the games in hd.
When MLB EI had WWOR My9 HD feeds of Yankees games this year, the feeds looked great each time via D*. NHL CI only had the Dallas local feed this past Sunday.
