View Full Version : Wireless Signal Options

At the risk of violating a multitude of rules, let me preface this by saying I am in no way trying to defraud any one or any company.
With that out of the way, I need some help. A friend of mine who lives 3 doors down signed up for D* a few months ago but was unable to complete the deal because there was no line of site due to the tall oak trees in his neighbor's yard. He's got TWC and really wants to switch. Our houses are about 100 yds apart and I've got a very strong signal. Is there a wireless solution that would allow him to subscribe to D* and use my dish to obtain the signal? We thought about running 400+ feet of coax but we'd need a repeater and multiple cables (unless we can get on the SWM program). Anyone out there been successful at transmitting the signal, including HD, over a wireless connection?
Thanks,
Greg Alsobrook

this has a violation of TOS written all over it... :D
/// Just out of curiousity... How would an SWM help you out in this situation?!? ///
EDIT: If you cascaded the SWM I spose...
If I were in his situation, I would definetly look more towards a slingbox (http://www.slingmedia.com/). However HD isnt an option as far as im aware at this point...
EDIT: Meanwhile, If you didnt live so far away i'd recommend throwing another dish up on your place or having your buddy invest in a WB616 for ya. Only other option would be to talk to this neighbor about your tree problems.

Not the way I read it. I don't see how it violates anything if he and his neighbor share the same dish but have their own separate accounts.
But anyway, to the OP question: there is no wireless solution. It's coax or nothing to get the signal from the dish to the receiver.

.
Maybe so..
but D* may see a risk on sharing the dish as a chance of one party that discontinues service. then uses the other's equipment to continue to receive service, thus steeling would be a risk.

Sharing a single dish is not unusual - multifamily homes or even small apartment buildings (not MDUs because they are a special case). As long as each user has a separate account with DirecTV, it's OK.
But there is no wireless solution, so running 400ft of cable, with all its issues, is the only way.

If it was up to me and I have the $$$, I would have a tall tower built inside the wooded area and mount the dish up on it. Might have to put up with a long cable run but a specialized multi-switch might be able to help pull in stronger signal after a long cable run.

I think one of the main purposes of the SWM is to allow D* to compete for the apartment business.

I was afraid of that. I'll let ya'll know what we do and how it turns out.
Thanks again for all the input.

Tree huggers please leave the room for a few minutes.
It may be an urban myth, but I have been told that a some copper nails pounded in a tree will kill it. !devil12:
Probably not the most neigbhorly thing to do, but ones gotta do, what ones gotta do. :D
