Can you still buy D* equipment? I have 3 receivers leased now, but want to buy another one. If I buy a receiver, let's say from ebay, do I own it or lease it?

Thanks

You can still own. I think you can buy an HR20 for around $900.

If the seller on eBay owns the unit than you would own it.

If the seller has a leased unit than he cannot sell it and if he does and you buy it you will not be able to activate it.

If you would like to own a unit you buy from DirecTV you can do that but you have to pay a lot more for it. The HR20/HR21 is $750 and I am not sure of the prices for the other units.

Some H20 receivers are owned, some are leased, it depends whether they were installed before the leasing program started. Almost all HR20 DVRs are leased, and many of the ebay listings don't tell you this, either because the "seller" isn't aware of the difference (maybe!) or because the listing is fraudulent.
I doubt if there are many (any?) H21 receivers or HR21 DVRs that are owned.
