I live in kc but have a job about 4 hours away in nebraska. I have a spare dish so I always hook up my two recievers in my job trailer when I go. The locals have always come in before but Ive never been this far away yet. Does anyone know if they'll reach 150-200 miles?

:welcome_s to DBSTalk.
Locals come from spot beams. "How big the spot is" will vary. Older SD spots are larger than the newer HD spots. 200 miles is not impossible as I "see" transponders from spot beams for locals over 300 miles away.
The only way to know is to try it.

Depending where you are you maybe able to use an antenna to get the locals.. just change the zipcode in anttenna setup..

I assume this map is for the older 102.8 (103 degree) bird for HD locals? I think its 103(b).. or is this map for 99 and 103(b).

It's the map for 101.

The spot beams from 4S are interesting to study. In my area (Milwaukee, WI) my local spot beam is on transponder 28, which also covers Chicago and as far north as Green Bay, WI. But the spot beams on two other transponders actually come in stronger!!

If you travel so far out of your local spot beam coverage that you can actually pick up another spot beam using the same transponder, it won't work because your receiver is only authorized to receive the channels tagged for your locals.

For example, San Francisco's locals are on transponder 28 also, but if I took my setup there it would not pick up the locals in the spot beam. I do wonder what goofy code it would display though, if any.

It probably wouldn't show any locals and give you a 771 error. Just a guess.

It is for STANDARD DEFINITION locals on the 101° spot beams.

Looks like Ill be farther west than that does that meen no major networks?Use an OTA antenna. Enter your new address here (http://www.antennaweb.org/) to see what you can receive OTA.
