Does DirecTV charge the full $300 to upgrade from a standard DVR reciever to an HD-DVR?

They could...
Each customer is evaluated based on their history.

And each CSR may give you a different answer.

That should be occuring less and less, as they continue to update their procedures and systems.

I called the 3 times

First time $199 for the unit, $99 for install, $19 shipping.

Ended up at $199 for everything after my 3rd call. I know they knew that I have been calling them because the person on the 2nd call mention that I had called earlier in the day. I know some here get it cheaper but I don't take any premium channels and 118 beer credits off worked for me!

Got an e-mail and phone call from D* for a free upgrade. CSR told me I'll be getting an HR21 and H21 on Nov 29th, with SWM. Switching out an old Zenith HD receiver and HR10-250. But as I've read, what CSR tells you and what the installer brings can be different.

The only HD-DVR "upgrade" deals I've been aware of are going from an HR10-250 that only receives MPEG2 to an HR20/21. I am not aware that D* is making any deals to upgrade from a Standard-Def DVR to HD.

That being said, what kind of deal you could get on an HD-DVR can only really be found by calling DirecTV and see what they say.

I am a long time pay on time customer with a SD TiVo R-10. I called to ask about a HD DVR upgrade and was surprised to be told a firm $299 purchase plus a monthly LEASE fee plus S&H and plus installation. The only option I was given to consider was to purchase the receiver from Best Buy and avoid the S&H charge. Geesh... It appears that I won't be upgrading and throwing good money after bad...

They're upgrading MPEG2 HD Receivers to MPEG4 HD receivers.
MPEG2 HDDVR's to MPEG4 HDDVR's.

But, SDDVR's would be replaced by R15's.

Not all customers are being switched out yet either. It depends on their history with the customer

I'm a long time customer and here's what they gave me:
HD DVR $199
Free Install of new dish
One year free of HD Service

Couldn't get them to budge anymore on the price.

Thats pretty good.
Did you have HD equipment before? Like a Hughes HD receiver?

I got my first HR20 at no cost back in March. I just tried to get a second HR20/21 to replace a HR-10 and was told the first time over the phone that the best they could do was $199 + shipping since I already received one for free.

Through a few emails and then a phone call I got them to give me it to me for $199 + shipping, but with a $12 credit per month for 10 months.

They gave me free HDDVR, only paid S&H. Probably could have got that for free too but I was pleased enough with the deal. Went from regular DVR to HD

I got a phone message from DTV that they wanted to upgrade my H10 to an H20 for free. Then on the phone they said it would cost $99 because I already had a free upgrade from H20 to HR20. I turned them down.

I got my first HD DVR w/ dish etc totally free 3 months ago...I really want another one for our newest HDTV...I've tried a few times to get some kind of deal and it went from being $299 on one call I think it was..down to $199...then $99..then back to $199....it's true..each CSR wings it as far as pricing goes.

I got some b-day money so if I can get the $99 deal , I'm gonna do it I think.

What were the magic words? My R15-500 has been nothing from trouble. How can I get them to upgrade it to an HD DVR for free?
