I just got direct tv within the last month. I'm thinking about getting hd programming, which i believe would be 9.99 a month. I have 2 d-11 receivers. I would need hd for only 1 tv. Would i have to pay to get an hd box? I don't need the dvr feature. Also would i need an addition dish installed for hd? If so, would i be charged for that?....Thanks for any help

H20 or H21 would cost $99 but D* might work with you there, and the dish would be thrown in for free, unless you already have the 5lnb dish.(along with restarting your 2 yr commitment).

If you call within your 90 day period, they may be willing to work with you in regards to a receiver swap.

I called Direct and they offered an HD receiver and wave the $99 fee, but they said it would be $50 to install a new dish. Would the new dish have to be re-aligned, or just have a new lnb installed? (something I could do myself)

It would be a complete install of a new dish(if you didnt have a slimline already). However the $50 is odd, most of the time that is free. Still a decent deal since you are getting the box for free

For HD, the aiming is a bit harder than for just sd, IMHO, it's worth the 50 bucks to have an installer do it right.

Agreed with that. Call them, be kind but firm, and who knows, maybe they'll give you a great deal.

I called Direct back last evening, and the deal they offered was a receiver for the price of $19.99 shipping, and a $50 charge, for which he tried to explain, but I still have no idea what that charge is for. He said that the dish install is free. Would it be worth it to call again and possibly get another offer? I have only had Direct since 10-28-2007, and the first rep I spoke to said that I was still considered a new customer

call again and tell them all your friends are getting it for free and if you dont get it for free you will cancel and go to dish and they will gladly do it for free. i got a HR20 and dish installed not only free but i made $50 on it so you should get it free easily.

Did they ship the receiver for free?

They waive the $99 otherwise you would be paying $99 plus s/h($19.95) and $50(not for install). The $50 charge is because you are a New Customer and upgrading your equipment. The $50 charge is based on high risk or low risk customers. If you are a New or high risk customer(no matter how long with D*) the $50 is applied and can not be waived.
If you stay current with your bill and where to upgrade in 6 months there would be no $50 charge.

Get the DVR. You'll never look back - except for replays.

Har, har.

Being that he just started an 18-month commitment, threatening to cancel sounds like a hollow threat (especially since the termination fees would be much greater than what DirecTV is asking him to pay for the HD receiver).

I agree, there are better ways to get what you want than threaten to leave.

Just an update on my situation. After 2 calls to Direct tv today, my deals are getting worse. Now all they will offer is an hd receiver for $99.99 + $19.99 shipping, and they won't budge. I spoke to a second tier rep the last call. Do you guys think that I could get a better deal by buying an hd receiver from e-bay, and then asking Direct for a free dish installation?

You have to pay to play. Every call you made was logged, or usually is, so when they saw you trying to keep calling a get a better deal , they will dry up. YOu had a good deal, you tried for too much based on your acct. standing....if you want HD, take the 99+shipping deal...

I was just reading this thread and laughing to myself.

Some folks get 2 free SD DVR's and $5/month off the bill for a year (me). Some folks pay $298 for the priviledge of leasing an HD DVR. Sheesh!

Dealing with DirecTV lately is as laughable as buying a new car. I'm surprised the CSR doesn't tell you they have to talk it over "with their manager" and put you on hold like car dealers do before returning to tell you what deals are available.

We need a satellite TV provider that operates like Car-Max: This is the price, this is what you pay!! Not all these "surprise" fees. I didn't even know about that $50 if you are a new customer or an old one "we don't like because you don't pay on time" surcharge.

I've seen almost this exact phrasing used several times in these forums and am confused about what the phrase - especially the emphasis on 'priviledge' - is supposed to mean. What exactly is meant by this?

I've been checking on E-bay, and found some new HR20 receivers cheaper than I could get from Direct tv. So i'm thinking about buying an hd receiver on E-bay and then hopefully getting a free dish and install from Direct. Has anyone here done that before?...Thank for the help

u can do it, however its still a lease, and you should be careful, if the box has outstanding charges against it you wont be able to get it activated unless you pay them

What msmith said +1

Buying a used DIRECTV INC. receiver on eBay is always risky. And if you need a new access card (likely), you'll have to order one from DIRECTV INC. for $20.

New customers nearly always get the best deals on equipment and installation. That's why it's best to get the equipment you want when you place your initial order for service.

Considering that you were already under contract, when you called them back, they still offered you some pretty good deals, which you should have taken.
