I just read the web page on this and maybe I am misreading it, but it appears that for $1.99 a month (after a $1.99 initial fee) your extended warranty provides you with a $20.00 savings on an out of warranty repair. So by my calculations, if you have a failure requiring a repair within 9 months, you will save some money, more than 10 months and you have paid more for the warranty than the added cost of a non-extended warranty repair. What am I missing? Can it really be that the only savings for a extended warranty repair is $20.00? Please help me understand this.

I replaced 2 crapped out, out of warranty DPs under this plan in early 2002. No catches.

As I understand it, if you have the warranty, you entire repair is covered. If you do not have a warranty, they will discount your repair cost by $20 if you sign up for the $1.99 a month deal to cover future equipment breakdown. I hope this clears it up.

Dish's $1.99 waranty covers all your Dish Network equipment, Receivers, Remotes, LNBF's and Dish Network Branded Switches.

Your warranty must be in effect for at least 30 days before you can file a claim and be covered. The only charge for an in warranty repair or replacement is $14.99 for shipping and handling charges. I have replaced a remote and one out of warranty 501 under this plan and the cost was only $29.98. Cost of a 501 $250 plus, cost of a UHF Platinum remote $50 plus retail.

Looks like I did indeed misunderstand the web page describing this on the Dish site, wonder how many others did likewise and passed on the service. Maybe Dish should take a look at the page to make it clearer how the extended warranty works, could be they would get more takers.

So should I wait until the 1 year warranty is almost ready to run out before I buy the extended warranty, seems buying the warranty before then will not get you anything? It does sound like a good deal now that I understand it, covering the LNFB and remotes as well as the receivers is worth the cost. Is it $1.99 per receiver or does that cover multiple receivers?

Ditto what JohnL said. With a Dish 6000, 2 Dish 500's, a 3900, a PVR 501 and a side dish for the HD, it's a bargain.

The cost is $1.99 a month, period no matter how much equipment you have. It's far and above the best value that Dish offers!

Yep, I agree. Now that I understand the program, I will be signing up, thanks for all the great feedback.

They should promote this more too.

To close this out (at least for me), I used my online account at the Dish website to add the Extended Warranty to my account, just logged in, made a few clicks, got a conformation that I had added the $1.99 service and I was done. Took all of 5 minutes and I did not have to call a CSR.

I think that this is necessary for anyone who has a Dish PVR. I look at it as just a matter of time till I use this. I didn't wait until my warrenty to be up on my 501 or 721 to sign up.

Does anyone know if the warrenty covers lost remotes? If not how much is one for the 721? I say one on Dishdepot.com for $60 though.

Jeff,

Call and tell them that the remote is broken. I reported my remote broken and Dish sent a new one for the $14.99 replacement fee and they didn't require the old remote to be returned. Actually the remote did work but two number buttons didn't work unless I used all the strength in my thumbs to press it down for it to work, my wife and kids couldn't get the remote to work at all on those buttons.

John,

I'll give it a try. Hopefully its hidden somewhere, like my daughters bedroom or something.

If they see this being abused they will require shipment for now on. Especially with them reading these posts.
