I'm curious if anyone has a video scaler/up-converter in use with their directv service? If so which model and how do you like it? Does it upconvert the standard channels very well? And how do they compare to the TNT/TBS D* upconverted channels.
I'm considering ordering one, but wanted to see if anyone has experience first and with which model.

If you've got an HDTV then you already have an upconverter/scaler in use.
You will never get as good quality out of one as you do with an upconverted channel because you would be upconverting at the very end of the line instead of the beginning. When a network upconverts they are upconverting the raw data. If you did it, you would be upconverting the signal after it was compressed and transmitted by DIRECTV.

Hmm I guess I figured if a DVD can be upconverted with one of those upconverting DVD players and made to look better, than the lousy D* standard channels could also.

It's all about the quality of the video being upconverted. DVD quality is significatly better than SD via DIRECTV.
