Not sure if this is the best place for this, but hopefully it’s not too OT.
With the HR20 now beginning to support video streaming, I’m pondering what my options are. Right now I have an old PC (1 ghz; 256 mb RAM) that is basically my file server. It works just fine. I have a couple big hard drives and an external USB hard drive hooked up to it. My DSL modem is also there hooked to my wireless router to wirelessly connect to my laptop. I access all the files on the desktop through network shares and control the headless PC through VNC.
My HR20 is currently hooked up to an Apple Airport Express for DOD (with video streaming in mind). It also is hooked to my stereo to stream music from iTunes on my laptop to my stereo. I now will be able to physically locate the desktop, modem, and router closer to my TV/HR20 (actually in the basement under my entertainment system), so I’m thinking obviously hardwired to the HR20 would be the way to go and my laptop will be much closer to the router also. But, is the HR20 my only option for getting video from my PC to my TV? Is there a way to directly hook it up? Will it even work with such an old computer? What would I need? I’m not opposed to buying a new PC, but it would have to be pretty cheap (going through a divorce and a move hopefully shortly).
And I realize this is OT, but I’m also thinking about moving my iTunes library to the desktop since it can be painfully slow on my laptop because it’s accessing the music wirelessly through a network share drive. I’d also like to be able to get the music to my stereo (which has no more optical ports as they are both taken up by the HR20 and DVD player). So what’s the best way to do that? Would simply using the line out port on the PC to a free audio in on the receiver suffice? Do I need a fancy audio card or would onboard audio be fine for that?
Thanks for any help!
