i've noticed that since implementation of new hd content that it seems less space is used up for my recordings. i'm assuming that the mpeg 4 channels are compressed a little more therefore not needing as much space. does anyone have comparison stats for size of different formats for lets say a 1 hour program? also, is there a list of which channels are which(mpeg2, mpeg4, etc.)?

Any channels on the new sats are MPEG4, that would be all the new HD stations and the HD locals with the exception of the older NYC and LA locals in the 80 range.

i think hdtivo is advertised as 30 hours and hr20 as 50. there's math in there somewhere :)

It's advertised as 30 hrs MPEG2, 50hrs MPEG4, and something like 200hrs SD, with the stock drive, and it seems to do even a little better than that, IME.

With a FAP 750, I would guess I have about 150hrs of MPEG4 capacity.

There is a lot of variation depending on the type of content. Fast moving sports uses more per hour. Most movies, series, etc... use less.

definitely variety, I just deleted a one hour HD program and i got back 3% of my drive. When i went away over the weekend i had estimated a certain number of shows X that 3% would be used when i got back but it was nowhere near that. I was happy it took less space.
