I am a former DTV customer who left last year when DTV never could get an installer to come put the 5LNB dish up. After a year with Time Warner, I decided to come back to DTV.

Last year I remember there were several threads which discussed the things to look for in a proper install, but I can't find them. I remember that the 6x8 switch has to be powered, but can't remember whether it can be put in a box on the side of the house where all my cables come together and then waterproofed power cable run down to an outside outlet. I will need the 6x8 to power all the TVs and a DVR.

While I had DTV for 8 years, the original installation and the 3LNB dish were put in by contractors I hired. I am concerned after reading all the horror stories of installs.

There are a lot of threads in various forums here, including a couple with tips and tricks, etc. Take a few minutes to check all of the DirecTV forums, and especially look at the threads in the "sticky" area of each forum. That's most likely where you would find the installation tips and tricks.

The WB68 multiswitch is not powered. It can go inside or out, but is not supposed to be exposed directly to harsh weather.

You need an RG6 coax run for each tuner. A DVR has two tuners, so two coax for a DVR. If you also want to receive over the air channels (OTA), plan on one additional coax to each location where you want OTA, because you can't mix satellite and OTA signals on the same coax anymore.

The installer is going to run the cable the fastest and easiest way possible. That normally means around the outside of the structure, then in through a hole to the tv location. If you want or need more than that, such as running wire down inside walls, that will be extra cost.

Before you sign off on the paperwork, check all of the channels you are supposed to be receiving. Also check at least some channels on every receiver that is installed (but you should only need to check all on one receiver).

Welcome to dbstalk.com, and welcome back to DirecTV if/when that happens.

In my book the #1 thing to getting a proper install is for YOU to be there. DO NOT let the wife/girlfried/s.o./whoever be there. It must be YOU.

Watch what is going on. Don't stand 6 inches behind the guy the whole time, just be there and be invovled.
