Looks like I might have a problem with my HR20-100. It is with the OTA tuner.
Will I get a HR20 in exchange or a HR21 which certainly would fix my OTA problem!!! NOT!
Can I request one and just keep sending back the HR21 if that is what they send me?
Thanks

They can't guarantee which model you will get. Even if you get at CSR, manager, whatever, that tells you you will absolutely 100% for sure get X you may still get Y.

If they send me a HR21 can I just send it back till I get a HR20???

If you don't want the HR21 then my suggestion to you is to not open the box unless it is an HR20! I think if you open the box it is yours.
This is like if you buy a refrigerator/freezer from Sears and they need to replace it but come with a refrigerator without a freeer and they say they have found out nobody uses the freezer anyhow.
Good luck, and tell us what happens.

It would seem if you had an OTA tuner problem it could hardly be rectified with an HR21. You now have one of those due to tuner failure.

It's kind of hilarious in a "black" sort of way that they would actually send someone an HR21 to replace an HR20 with OTA tuner failure and not think that might be a problem.

One things for sure - the OTA tuner in the HR21 won't fail too.

Yeah... Hey johnnytex make sure you keep us updated on this. I like to know how this one plays out. Thanks!

From what I have been reading, most of the refurbs RIGHT NOW are HR20's. After fighting with them (and losing) for an HR20 on my initial upgrade the new HR21 I got died after 2 days. The replacements were HR20's (actually 2 as the first HR20 replacement was DOA). The 2nd one is funtioning fine (electically that is - no buzzing, beeping, chirping - knock plastic). These have been coming out of the Carlisle PA "refurb" depot.
Right. So it would be a particularly egregious roll-of-the-dice to get an HR21 to replace an HR20 with a defective OTA tuner. Sometimes you just have to laugh at the ridiculousness of the whole HR20/HR21 OTA fiasco. All because someone decided that these are equivalent units. I really like their satellite service overall and recommend it to my friends over competing products, but this was not one of DirecTV's finer management decisions.
Let's hope this gets straightened out sooner rather than later...

I just got a replacement HR20 this week.(refurbished). I highly doubt you'll get an HR21.....they wouldn't waste those on existing replacements...

Great. That's the news I was hoping for.
I will tell you my results as well.
I have an HR20 with one dead OTA tuner also. So far I've just decided to live without OTA on that unit, waiting to see what comes along with regard to OTA.

Just got off the phone with a CSR. He is sending out a tech on Friday with a replacement unit. Since I have a OTA problem, they can not just send me a new one. He said he would request a HR20. We will see what happens!

The tech should call the day before. We can only hope he knows what is on the truck and doesn't waste more of your/his time.
So.. how did it go johnnytex?
I can't understand how they can have the technology to put a satellite in orbit, but they don't know which DVR they are giving you. It makes me wonder how a satellite ever makes it off the ground.

I didn't know you could buy a refrigerator from SEARS without a freeer.

I recently called about OTA tuner issues and the tech said he couldn't help me because I didn't have a supported OTA antenna. I managed to convince him that it wasn't the antenna since the antenna worked fine through my TV. He said the only thing that he could do would be to replace my receiver, which he did. I got a refurb HR20-100. There was a sticker on the outside of the box marking it as such.
Unfortunately, the problem I had has persisted, albeit at a much less significant level.

Sorry to take so long but it has taken a while to get things resolved.
I called D* and got a nice CSR. We did all the usual things and he agreed than I have a bad tuner.
See http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=111095 for more details.
I ask if he could send me a new receiver with an OTA. He that since OTA are not usually covered on the protection plan; he had to send a tech out. I scheduled the time, called D* and requested a HR20, then I called the instillation firm and requested the HR20 as well. They said they would send the message to the tech.
When he arrived we did the usual head scratching and he agreed I had a bad receiver. However, there were no HR20 as his warehouse and did not bring one. He called his supervisor. The sup told the tech to call D* and order one???
He was on the phone for a while and then told me to talk to the lady with special equipment or something like that. She said the she could order a replacement receiver with OTA support, but could not guarantee what kind. Also, because I was getting a new receiver, I have to re-up my two year commitment. We had some discussion but did not really want to fight so I said OK.
Today, FedEx delivered a refurbished HR20-700 with return instructions.
If new events arise I will report.

What's wrong with this picture???
There was no freezer
I will soo be in the same boat of needing an HR20. But re-upping for 2 years on a refurb unit when you have been paying the lease fee. NO.
I just received a HR20-100 Refurb today, it is to replace my new HR20-700, which has a glitch in rebooting. Which is the better unit, I an concerned of picture quality on HD. I assume the 100 is an older unit. I have not opened the box yet.
Please Advise.

It's actually a newer design. The -100 is (allegedly still) made by Thomson. The -700 was (and is no longer) made by Pace. They are functionally identical. The -100 runs cooler, has a slightly larger HD, and has coaxial digital audio out in addition to otical digital audio. It receives firmware upgrades somewhat later than the -700's, however.
DTV told me last night they still have HR20-700's. Mine was acting strange and it was only 3 mo old. They are replacing it with a identical new unit 2nd day FedEx he said, I will soon see if their word is good.
Oh, well!
I installed the replacement refurb HR20-100, heard a rattle like a loose screw in the unit rolling around. Called DTV they said well lets try it to see if it is OK. Went thru all the setup, and download, etc.. Receiver never would see the Access Card. DTV is shipping a replacement. Hooked back up the 700 for now.
Got a replacement for my bad HR20-100 that was a replacement for my original HR20-700 that would not reboot properly. This time it is a NEW HR20-700. So far it works fine.
Where is this HR20 coming from? They tell me they don't have any!
They told me they had them and was going to make sure. I however did not look at the From Address on either box. And I already dropped it off at Fed-EX drop station. They was going to charge me allot if I did not return the bad ones within 7 days. I am sorry.
It was a new 700, it had all the goodies- Cords, Cables, Manuals/Instructions Sheets, Remote, Batts, etc.. Also did not have that refurb seal they put on the case on the rear, it had the factory original seal if removed voids warranty.
