View Full Version : Should I expect DTV to fix non-grounded and non-aligned 103 dish install?

All of my channels come in just fine - now.
Can't say what will happen in rain or snow.
From what I've read on the board the numbers below indicate that my dish alignment needs tweaking (no 103 satellite when installed).
I told DTV that they need to come out and ground my dish (no grounding whatsoever against code/regulation/law) and that they could check alignment at that time, but want to charge me for it as the installation is "out of warranty".
Waiting for a manager callback, but I don't think that they can wiggle out of doing illegal installations by hiding behind a limited installation warranty.
Any insight on the grounding issue or the 103 signal strengths?

2 HR20-700 0x1d4 connected to a Slimline 5 LNB Dish through a Zinwell WB68 multi-switch
2 new RG6 cables running to each HR20-700 (about 50-75’ run from dish), installation Jan 2007
One of two lines on each HR20 has a BBC relocated prior to a diplexer with no effect on signal strength between the tuners
The dish has not been touched since the original installation

The results below are similar for tuner 1 and tuner 2 on both HR-20s (same readings from signal strength meters)(and a H20 before it was replaced).

Those that had no HD locals on initial install have had some success in sweet-talking a free re-alignment for KA after the install warranty has expired. The grounding issue after the install warranty has expired seems like a "health and safety" issue to me, and I would think the warranty period should not apply. It might be easier to get some credits, but I hate to use those "freebies" up for something they should have done right the first time. You don't want any customer rating "hearts" taken off your account to get this resolved.

I agree with Stew - the only question that D* could raise is whether you inspected the installation before the installer left and had the opportunity to raise the question then, and did not do so. Of course, those doing the install should have more knowledge that us consumers, right? In my case, they do, but I did take a close look at it but fortunately was not asked to sign anything saying I agree it was done properly.

Of course, three hours later when I went out into the back yard, I found where he had removed a corner security light when he first tried to hook the dish up on the back of the housebut ran into tree issues and had to move it to the front - then forgot to re-attach the security light, which was dangling from its wire about two feet from the roof.

Update
Got nowhere with DTV but I did get the local installer Premier Communications to come out and fix the no-ground problem which made me happy. :)
Also got him to tweak the alignment. I would have tried it, have put up 3-LNB dishes before, but would have had to figure out a way to get video to a laptop up on the roof - not really feasible to lug a 32" LCD up there.
New and improved signal strength readings in bold below next to the original reading. My mpeg4 channels from 103(b) should now be much less affected by weather.
One curiosity reported by the installer, he told me my slimline dish was installed using a sidecar dish mount.
