View Full Version : hd and DVI - what to do
I recently purchased a Mits HDTV and want to upgrade to HD on Dish. Here is the future problem I would like to avoid. The 921 would be the ultimate with the PVR, I would never use the interactive features (not a gamer). The problem I see with the 921 are the DVI outputs and the issue that my Mits only has component inputs. The 6000 may be my only choice, since it only uses component and RGB connections. With DVI outputs on the 921, Dish may enventually be required to only output HD content with the DVI for Copy Protection, shutting off the HD to the component user. I know I can purchase Mit's Promise Module which upgrades the set with DVI and firewire, but it runs about $1000. I would like to avoid throwing more money down the drain, just for copy protection. The concern with the 6000 is will Dish just say sorry and only give it's users SD or force a DVI module on us subscribers who bought a HDTV without DVI (almost all purchased up till now).

Hold off for a couple of months, Dish has a new Sat only HD receiver coming out that is built just for the Mits and will give you the DVI connection. If you don't need/want/care about OTA, this will be a good option for you.
Rumor has it that it will sell for around $299.

Looking at the photo from CES of the back of the 921, it looks like it has both DVI, component and composit outputs. Everything the 6000 has plus DVI. Just lacks fire wire.
We don't have an HD display, yet, but I've been wondering about this, too. Did some research, and managed to find an adapter:
http://www.ati.com/support/connectors/componentvideo/cablecomponentvideoadapter.html
But it only works if the output is DVI-I, which is a DVI connector that has analog RGB in addition to the digital signals. It's likely the 921's output will be DVI-D (digital only). More info on video interfaces at:

Good luck.

I heard about the dish sat receiver for the mits, but I thought you had to have the promise module with the DVI because that is how the receiver will connect.

The Mitsubishi only model is the 211. I heard that it will only have a firewire connection and will feed Dish Channels into the Mits TV for tuning.
Also I heard that the 921 has 2 firewire ports. Mike, where the link to the CES pics that you are referring too? I'd like to check them out.

I have a Panasonic CT-36HX41. It only has Component input for 480p/1080i.
I would rather buy the 811 and use the Component outputs on it than buy a soon to be out-of-date 6000. Hopefully they
do not shut off the 1080i Component. I', thinking that if they do, it might be in 2-3
years; not anytime soon. So say they turn it on in 2007, which is when I think the
FCC date for HD transition is, I'd be ready to buy a new HDTV set anyways.
