View Full Version : If the NFL Sunday Ticket...

I thought I would put up this poll, since I am seeing that many people signed up for DIRECTV just for the Sunday Ticket.

What would you choose if it were no longer exclusive?+

I would not change, as the package is not super important to me. I have enjoyed it much this season though.

But I thought it would be interesting to see the answers people had :)

DirecTV by far is still the best deal channels for cost. At least for me. Only reason I would look at moving away from DirecTV is if Sunday Ticket was exclusive to some other provider and I couldn't get it ala carte.

ST is a main reason I'm there, but as far as customer service, and HD channels, I'm very happy there. If they lost ST altogether, I might have to make a decision, if it was E* with the exclusive, I wouldn't even consider a switch!:nono2: But, we don't need to worry about that, cause Charlie is too cheap, and can't match $$$ with D*

I voted "shop around" since I wouldn't turn down a sweater deal if I saw one offered. But I've been happy with directv for quite some time now. It would have to be a very sweet deal to lure me away.

Even if I did subscribe to Sunday Ticket, I wouldn't change.

I initially came to DirecTV for the NFL Sunday Ticket, but my experience has been great, been with them for almost 10 years now. The only complaint I have is not a DirecTV problem, but I wish I was the market I live in had local channels available. I have been participating the CE's for almost a year for the HR20-700 and I must say that I am extremely impressed with that program. It is so unusual for a company to be so in tune with it's customers and to provide the kind of responsiveness to feature requests and capabilities is almost unheard of.

Not necessarily.

I don't subscribe to ST, because I think it's outrageously priced.

Although my primary reason for switching to Directv from cable 10 years ago or so was the ST, I would not consider changing under any circumstances. Comcast down here is pathetic in my opinion, both from a pricing and customer service standpoint. I have never had a problem with Directv. Knock on wood, I have not even had to replace a bad box in 10 years, only upgrade to something newer from time to time.

For the last several years I have been very happy with DIRECTV overall so while there might have been times in the far past where I might have considered shopping around, at this point I wouldn't even think of it.

Not having NFLST wouldn't be a big deal for me. I'd like to have it, but I just can't justify the $$ for the 3 or 4 Cowboy games I miss a year. (I don't really miss them, I go to the local sports bar)

Yeah, I kept my Cox internet and phone. Getting killed for internet, $54 or so a month for 10down and 1 up. Phone is at basic, basic $20 + taxes, and the only reason I keep the phone is for the alarm system. I have never had a problem with there internet other than them charging that much because I don't have there video package. I do monitor the AT&T website to see if they will up there DSL to anything more or equal to what Cox has. Has not happened yet, maybe someday. :)

An interesting pair of corollary questions in my mind:
1) Would you leave DIRECTV if NFL ST were no longer available on DIRECTV but on another provider, exclusively and requiring a programming requirement from that provider.
2) Would you leave DIRECTV if NFL ST were no longer available on DIRECTV but on another provider as a true ala carte package, requiring no other programming commitments from that other provider.

In the first case, I would probably (and definitely sadly) leave DIRECTV.
In the second case, I would most likely pickup the ala carte package and stay with DIRECTV for everything else.

Happy Holidays!

Hmmm, if #1 happened that might be the 1% that would make me leave. All though that would be a devastating loss if Direct TV lost NFLST.

#2 as a true ala carte, I'm with you Tom, I would go through the other provider for NFLSTand keep Direct TV.

I would leave because a: I don't like paying an extra amount for SF for HD games with no guarentee my team will be shown in HD. The other SF features for me are not worth it. b: The mess that has been called NHLCI. It is finally beginning to show progress but I suspect will will see a super fan deal for hockey before long.

Customer service is sad but then so is Comcast. Broadband will go down $15 bucks a month if I go back to cable and I can catch the football games in a sportsbar for about the same as I pay for ST and SF.

More HD channels are nice if not in Stretchovision. Content still has a long way to go.

In reference to Tom's question:

1 - Stay with DIRECTV. I am in a commitment anyway, and its my husband who loves the ST. But the general team favorite is played on locals, so its blacked out on ST anyway.

2. I might get the other provider for an a la cart ST - would totally depend on cost.

The reason I started with DirecTV was Sunday Ticket, period. I had to be able to watch "my" team!

I grew to like the total D* service so much, that I weaned the other TVs (except one) off of cable.

I would shop around for the best deal on ST, but would stay with D*, UNLESS they stop offering an OTA HD DVR. If both ST and OTA DVR went bye-bye, I would leave the second my required commitment expired, if not earlier.

NFL ST is nice to have, but it isnt a deal breaker for me, as I'm not a huge sports fan, I rather like it because I can invite my friends over who DO enjoy football, but, I dont have superfan, so, you may be able to get a grasp on just how much it really effects me. Now, next year when I have to pay for premier and ST, I'll definetly be reconsidering....
I originally subbed to DirecTV back in 2000 with 2 RCA's. Bought and installed both the RCA's and the 2LNB dish that, as far as I know is still on my old house. However, I found that for my viewing habits, DirecTV didnt fit my budget, so I cancelled my account, and "went with cable" ;)
Cox always treated me pretty well, and $69 for TV & Broadband wasnt a horrible deal either. However, upon moving to my new home, I went with DSL (eeewwwww), and called Retentions to re-instate my account.
And, here I am...

I would leave Directv, because of their decision to not continue working with Tivo with the new HD channels and also because I cannot get my locals in HD from them.

I know I am in the minority here, and dont get me wrong cable's service generally is terrible no matter what part of the country you are in, but I find it short sighted for Directv to not offer a MPEG4 Tivo unit along with their HR20/21's to allow consumers to choose.

randyk47
12-05-07, 04:32 AM
I started with DirecTV before ST because of signal quality. Yes, I now have ST and that's a big draw for me so I can follow my teams in other parts of the country but that's not a deal maker or breaker. I've never had the cable service here in San Antonio so I can't speak to the signal quality or programming but I can't imagine it is better than DirecTV so I have no reason to switch, with or without ST.

12-05-07, 06:35 AM
While ST was the main reason I signed up for Directv, I would stay even if ST was no longer exclusive. Cable sucks and from what I have seen of Dishnetwork at homes of friends and family, I think it would be step down to switch.

Being a Giants fan, I'm lucky enough to never miss a game to due to blackouts. I suppose that might make a difference if I was a fan of an out-of-town team.

So my answer is 'I would stay with DirecTv"

I wouldn't switch, because after over 12 years of NFL-ST with D*, I'm dumping it. I will not renew. It has gotten way too expensive and continues to climb. When it was 99 bucks, it was a good deal. At current prices, I'll watch OTA/ESPN, etc, and catch the highlights as they are available.

I'm happy with D* as a service, and with their hardware. I'm not upset with either D* or the NFL for the pricing structure of NFL-ST. It really is nothing more than it being far more expensive to me than it is worth.

I came to this understanding this year. I've not been available for over half the games on NFL-ST....guess what...I didn't miss them...at all. I find I can see enough football without NFL-ST.

Basically, NFL-ST has been priced out of my comfort zone. No hard feelings though, business is business.:)

I'm in the same boat. After moving in early April this year, then speaking with a CSR later that month and being assured I would receiver SuperFan for free as part of the Draft Weekend deal, come SF billing time, I got billed for the first installment. Called and spoke with a CSR and was assured there are NO deals for SF. OK, fair enough.

Made me step back and take a different look at ST all together. I e-mailed my local CBS and FOX affiliates asking which games they were scheduled to broadcast this season. Looked at that, plus NBC, ESPN and NFLNetwork games and realized that I had more than enough football to watch and didn't need to pay for the Sunday Ticket "cool factor" and I could still enjoy football. So even after 11 years of subbing to ST, I cancelled it all together and haven't missed it.

So with ST out of the picture, how do I feel about DirecTV? I'm not even LOOKING to go anywhere else. I'm staying right here and loving every minute of it!

tonyd79
12-05-07, 08:56 AM
NFL ST is a big thing for me but at the same time, it is only part of the picture.

I went with DirecTV because of out of town sports and movies. At the time (mid 90s), they blew cable away, especially for access to baseball and Penn State sports.

Cable has caught up in baseball and has gotten ahead with movie channels but not in other areas (college sports). It was to the point where if I had not gotten DirecTV, I may not have gone with them as cable would have filled most of my needs but not quite all.

Now DirecTV is pulling ahead again for my needs. They are ahead in HD (yes, cable will probably catch up) but DirecTV will probably stay ahead in terms of out of town sports in HD and will be competitive in movies (or better) in HD. So, the reasons I started with DirecTV are back again.

Throw in that they do not get into squabbles with the Big Ten Network, ESPN (ESPNU) and don't raise my rates every time they add a channel...

All in all, DirecTV hasn't always been the 100% perfect choice but it sure has been the better choice for me for over a decade and it continues to be so.

Well, I voted that I would shop around. I came to D* in order to obtain NFLST. My team is only shown 1-2 times per year outside their market, so I wanted the option of watching them every week. If D* lost the exclusive rights to NFLST, then I would shop around for a better deal. But that better deal would be based on more than just price. Do the other providers give me the same or better channel lineups that I already get? Do the other providers give me the same or better signal quality? Do the other providers beat D* pricing? Those are the questions that would all have to be affirmative for me to leave D*.

If NFLST wasn't available on D*...I would really have to think about it. I might leave for a new provider, but it would still have to meet my other expectations.

I wouldn't shop around or leave immediately but I certainly would when my committment is up. It is the reason that I stayed with DirecTV the last time. It certainly wouldn't be an automatic switch but I'd look. I may look anyway because the cost of NFL ticket + games in HD is getting very expensive and more and more games will be on Thursdays, NFL network, Sunday Nights, Monday and alternate Tuesdays when the moon is 1/4 full. On a per game basis it is very expensive.

It's difficult to understand why the NFL signs these exclusive contracts. I know they are getting wheelbarrows full of money for it but it just seems that they could get more if they opened it up for all the content providers. Taking this assertion to it's absurd conclusion: at what price would NFLST have to go to before you "no longer considered yourself" a "football fan"?. Furthermore, who cares who has the assignation of "football fan". It's not a like it's a badge of honor or somesuch. Some might even argue that fan = fanatic = fool, but I wouldn't do such a thing.:) So how much might a fool...oooops, excuse me...fan, part with in order to retain the lofty status of "fan"?

Speaking of "fans", I'm not much a fan of "at any price", but that attitude doesn't make me less of a football fan, just perhaps less willing to be jobbed by the provider.

Nice pronouncement, though. :)

I look at my ST this way......when I lived up in the Seattle area I used to go to an occasional Seahawks game. Even back then two or three home games cost me lots more than ST is costing me today. Fast forward a few years and I get stationed in the DC and go to a few Redskin games. Same deal, ST is way cheaper than buying 2 tickets for 2 or 3 home games. So now I live in San Antonio. I'm not a Dallas Cowboys fan. I still follow the Skins and Hawks. I can sit in the comfort of my home with my HDTV and catch every game, many of which don't get on the locals down here because we're out of market. For me it's both a bargain and a pleasure. I watch other teams occasionally but with one team on the east coast and the other on the west my football Sunday is pretty solid for the better part of 7 hours. I really don't care that much about watching all 12+ games, not why I have ST. Having said that, came to DirecTV because of quality and will stay with DirecTV for the same reason. ST came along well after I was a satellite convert.

As a Lions fan, this is a tough question to answer at this time of year. At the start of the season, I would do anything to get Sunday Ticket. This time of year, when I've officially given up on Lions football "forever", I have promised myself not to waste my money on it next year. But when the draft and minicamp roll around...

I voted B, because isn't that what we all do? Go to the best deal? It just so happens that Directv is the best deal for many of us. I imagine Directv will be the best deal for me for quite a while, regardless of Sunday Ticket, but wouldn't blindly say that I'll stay with Directv forever.

If everything else stayed the same, and if the Ticket were out there for everyone, I would have to jump ship to Comcast.

It would be because of On Demand.

I know they don't have all the HD Channels (yet??) but their OnDemand works, and works fast, none of this downloading lag time of nearly on minute for every two and a half minutes of show length.

If DirecTV could work the bugs out, and I know it is BETA OnDemand, I could convince my girlfriend to stay with DirecTV. But with the need to have really high speed internet to make DirecTV (almost) On Demand work, it makes it difficult to like the current format of On Demand.

Now I would certianly stay if they offered DLB, and offered OTA on the HR21 (or the next HR??), and worked the bugs out of On Demand. But now I'm in dream land.

Using that logic I would not be a fan of any team I follow, all sports. Then again, that's that NFL ST thought that those that have it are better than everyone else and D* should cater to their needs only. :nono: I'm not saying all people think that, after years of HD forums that is what I see.

Besides, I don't like my belly getting that big on beer and fatty foods. Kinda ridiculous isn't it.

I dumped ST three seasons ago (I had it since it stated on C-Band) because the cost kept going up as the quality of play in the NFL descended to mediocrity. Any game (2 or 3 a season) I've wanted to watch has been available without season ticket.

If you were a football fan you would have NFLST. If you do not have you are an ocassional viewer

Or you're a real fan and are going to the games and cheering rather than sitting on a sofa.

I switched to D* because I wanted the NFLST and I got fed up with Comcast.

Fast forward 4 years later...

I still dig ST. Nothing like kicking back with a few cold ones while a pot roast or chili or some other homemade goodness is coooking in the kitchen (yes, I cook). Its my way of relaxing after a stressful workweek.

I found last year that I really liked the MLB Extra Innings package just as much, if not more. Its a great value for all the games you get. I put a TV out in the garage and an old Laz-E-Boy and a kegerator (its the Man Cave). I am looking forward to more high def baseball.

As for would I stay? If ST were available from another provider, and they offered me a good deal...sure, I'd go. I haven't seen a raise in 5 years as this area is economically depressed. It would come down to money, plain and simple.

Out of curiosity, do you have a family?

That's pretty funny. Real fans do not go to games, just people that like to drink and socialize.

Real fans watch the game in the privacy of there own home with no interuptions and where they can see every play close up.

Going to games is a waste of money unless you are there to look like a fan and pretend you can see what is going on.

Survey still showing that 1/3 would look elsewhere or jump ship if D* quit providing Sunday Ticket. One third is a significant number of users considering this forum tends to lean pro-DirecTV. No wonder they pay the NFL so much to keep it. It's responsible for 1/3 of its customers. Amazing.

I don't know that I could make the jump to thinking that the people on this forum are that representative of the general subscriber base - I very seriously doubt that, in fact.

LOL...yes, a wife an a 9-year old son. They respect the Satellite TV-d/Kegeratored "Man Cave" in the garage... :)
