I currently have a new Sharp Aquios LC46D64U (1080p) LCD and a SuperDish installed with DISH Player-DVR 625. I am in the Milwaukee market and HD locals are not yet broadcasted via Dish. Is it worth going to a new HD reciever (722) and get the limited HD service that is available with Dish? I am wondering if the upconvert is helpfull in clearing up the bismal picture I currently have with my new TV. BTW, I am using a Onkyo TX-SR605 receiver that I am running signal from the 625 through prior to going to the LCD. (The stereo receiver has HDMI upcoding). What does everyone think. Your help is appreciated.

sure its worth it, any HD is worth it. Whats the point of havin a tv like you have if your not going to watch HD?

But for the extra $20 a month to get a bunch of HD channels that I don't view as great choices of programming is the catch. If a lot of the channels I watch are not in HD yet, will I get better looking service by going to the new receiver?

It is a decision YOU have to make.

Get an antenna and get your HD OTA.

I know I need to make the decision, I just want to know if there is much signal improvement with the upcoding capability of the reciever?

SD channels won't look any better. Actually, they could look worse if the 722's upconvert is not as good as your TV's. I imagine the difference is negligible.

Channels like HDNet, HD Theater, Discovery HD, make it worthwhile for me. Even the Voom channels are worth it sometimes.

I have to admit, though, before I went to E*, I thought about just living with OTA HD since 75% of the HD content I watch is on the networks.

BTW you can get a 622/722 without HD but you will have to pay $6 or $8... I forgot... as a punishment fee :)

P.S. I did this for almost a year but the HD content is getting much better... very slow but it's starting to turn the corner. If you are into sports then HD is a must. Once you watch a game in HD it's hard to ever watch sports in SD again.

You'll likely be disappointed in the upconvert of your HD locals.

There are about 40 HD channels now, recent addtions have what I consider to be interesting programming and it looks very good in HD. Discovery's offerings alone provide a number of good shows..

Depending on where you are, if you can install a UHF Antenna, you maybe able to use the 622/722's OTA tuner to get all your HD locals and record those too. Are you in a position to get OTA, can you setup an antenna to get your locals?

The VIP622 does a better job of upconverting then the SR605 does. I have a SR605 also.

mattopia, thanks for the input.

Nothing of value is on OTA. 99% of my viewing is nationals.

That would be a personal opinion, one that going by the ratings is not shared by the majority of americans
