I need some help understanding HDTV> I live in the Fort Lauderdale market. I use Dishnetowrk but also have a cable tv hookup. If I get a TV such as the Sony KF60DX100 with a built in HDTV tuner, do I get the HDTV signal through my Dish Network receiver (501) or via the cable?, or do I need to use an antenna to pull in the shows in my local market offered in HDTV. This is one area I dont understand. Appreciate the help.

Thanks
Robert

The tuner in the tv is only for over the air broadcasts, so you need an antenna. If you also want Dish HD, you need the 6000, and if your cable provider has HD, you need their box.

Hope this clears things up for you!

Of course, the above statements apply, assuming the goal is to get HD through all of the above-mentioned sources. You don't have to, however.

The cheapest is to get the antenna for your built-in tuner. This should allow you to receive HD feeds for any local stations which you might pick up. The antenna can be cheap (Radio Shack used to sell a double bowtie which is now discountinued and can sometimes be found for $10 or less), and the signal is OTA (over the air), which is free.

Getting HD through your dish will require that you get the 6000 system receiver. You won't need to get the optional tuner module for it as you say your TV has a built-in tuner. This will run you roughly $500, and you won't find many channels in HD on your dish.

The box requirements for the cable service in your area is difficult to predict. You'd have to contact your cable company to see what equipment upgrades you might need, and if you need a certain service package to get HD channels.

You can choose any combo of these things, but go get a cheap antenna and use your tuner now - it's virtually free if you are within range of stations broadcasting in HD!
