View Full Version : Noisy 622
I have moved my 622 to our bedroom to support a 32" HD TV and any noise is too much. I'm getting a very soft whine which is too much,
Is the hard drive or a fan? Any suggestions to dampen the noise other than relocation the receiver to another room.

Other than the nightly update, the receiver should be silent. During normal operating conditions, neither the drive or the fan emit any noise. There is a noticeable fan noise, that lasts for about 10 seconds when the receiver goes though its nightly update...it was set as default to 3AM.
I have 2 622's and a 722. All 3 operate in complete silence.

Not quite. Although quietier than some of their early models. Fan is usually off but you can hear the disk drive. If the fan kicks in you can really hear it (make sure that you move the system update time if you put it in a bedroom).

Hmm...could be....all of my receivers are located on the opposite side of the sitting/laying area of the rooms they are in...and they're all large rooms 30'+ across. The distance is enough that, both my 622 and 722 update at 3:00AM and 3:30AM, and both in the bedroom...we never hear them. The first 2-3 days, they were disturbing...I guess like anything else (chime clock, etc.) we got used to it.
Even so, walking by the receivers, other than during the update, I've never heard any noises.
OTOH, seeing and hearing go at the same time? :o

Sure you can get use to the noise. 35 years ago I was in the Air Force and my room was less than a 1000 feet from the main runway with my rooms window facing it. After the first week, I never remember waking up when the planes were taking off.
I have one of my ViP622's in my bedroom, and rarely notice any sound. But definitely can hear it when its quiet. I have a room Air Conditioner and in the summer its may be a magnitude or two louder. That doesn't keep me from sleeping.

I just stood next to the 722 while I put it through some operations, and I was able to hear the HD clicking. I walked to the other side of the room, repeated the operations, and could not hear anything. The HD noise level coming from the 722 is about on par with the EHDD sitting next to it, which I also cannot hear from across the room.
It's probably more a case of my hearing getting weaker, than anything else.
