How high should the pole be in order to have a pole mount? :)
I personally have an 8' pole, a little more than 3 feet below ground and a little less than 5 above.

I would think you want it deep enough to be below the frost line.
I have mine high enough to be above the deer around here.

Mine is head high, and my head is between 5 and 6 feet off the ground

So you need to climb up to go to "the head"?

Some would say that I need to pull it out of a dark and dank place.....

Typically a six or seven foot pole is used, with three feet in the cement in the ground. Dig an 18 inch diameter hole.

Everyone is correct. Make it too high and it blows around while being hard to service. Make it too low and the dogs & deer will piss on it. The 23,000 miles to the satellite starts where it starts. Stability and plumb orientation are most important.

For dbs, any height is fine, with consideration of getting a clear line of sight.
The 6 foot ereqirement only has to do with services that require a microwave transmission, like Hughesnet or Wild Blue.

Have DTV do it. They did mine for I believe $52 or $58 total. They removed dish from roof, put pole in cement and had 6' above ground, ran new wire underground to house and made sure everything worked before they left. They also provided pole and cement. Was going to do myself, but couldn't do it cheaper.:D
