Is it possible to connect the 622 via broadband and disconnect the phone line without paying the $5/mo fee for not having a phone line connected?

Yes. Reports vary about whether you have to call or it happens automatically. The DISH software seems really picky about the broadband being up all the time though, at least to me.

I believe the broadband connection is similar to hooking up a phone line in that once it connects and transmits data, you will not be charged the $5 connect fee. Calling a CSR will not work.

I do not have a land line. Only the broadband, and never called to activate it. You have to manually tell it to ask for an IP address though. Just plugging in isn't enough. Use the remote and find the broadband setup screen anad reset the connection. I have a vip722 which should be close enough to the same. It does complain within 24 hours about not being connected if I unplug something. Then you have to reset the conection in the GUI to get an IP again.

According to Dish Network, using broadband will avoid the monthly fee, but you still need a phone line for ordering PPV. Which seems pretty stupid.

Thats absurd. Well.... after hooking up broadband temporarily to see what dishonline is like I quickly realized that I'm not missing anything.

I don't think I'm missing anything either. I have the Slingbox Pro and anything I need to do over the internet, I can use that. No one has shown me how Dishonline is of any benefit over the Slingbox yet.

As others have posted...I've got a line that runs through my modem. I love it, and it saves tons of cash. There is NO problem hooking DISH up to it.
Good luck.

Define "tons of cash". I may want to run a line through my modem too.
